Aberdeen Preview – Are Aberdeen set for a third straight win and avoid any unwanted surprises?

It’s been a real stop start season for Aberdeen since returning to football with two of their five league games being postponed due to player breaches. A 1-0 defeat at home to Rangers on the opening day was followed (nearly three weeks later) by a narrow victory over St Johnstone before another win at home to Livingston last time out. Those games have been useful not only to build confidence within the squad but also ensure that they are physically prepared for this and their hopes of moving a step closer to the group stage.

Whilst Aberdeen are regular participants at this stage they are yet to make it into the group stage since 2007.

Whilst they have struggled to go beyond qualifying Aberdeen have a very good record at home in the Europa League. Last season’s defeat against Rijeka was their first loss at Pittodrie in 12 European games. That indicates how strong they are on their own pitch. And underlines the benefit of getting drawn at home in these one-legged ties.

Due to a number of injuries, especially in forward positions, Derek McInnes has looked to strengthen the squad by bringing in Marley Watkins who enjoyed success in Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle before moving to England.

NSI Preview – Can minnows build on excellent first round win over Barry Town to cause an even bigger shock?

NSI have enjoyed regular qualification for European competition but it’s no surprise that the part-time minnows are somewhat limited when they reach the qualifiers themselves. It’s been a case of one and out for the Islanders in each of the past five years. Their opponents in those games have been the likes of Linfield, Ballymena and Hibernian. The latter of those obviously play in the same league as their next opponents. NSI will be hoping for a more positive experience this time having lost 12-5 on aggregate to Hibs back in 2018.

The club have already made history by progressing to the second round of qualification, however, courtesy of their 5-1 win over Barry Town last week.

It was just their second win in European competition throughout their history so it’s something of a rarity. However, they know that the level of opposition is much better this time around. And the fact they will be required to do something they’ve never done before – and that’s win a European game away from home.

Striker Klaemint Olsen scored a hat-trick in the win over Barry Town – following on from scoring 26 goals in the previous season. So he’s clearly the biggest threat.

Aberdeen vs NSI Betting Advice

The odds suggest this will be a very straightforward encounter for Aberdeen but we’ve seen already this week that Scottish teams are not strangers to being on the wrong end of an upset. However, it would rank as one of the biggest surprises if Aberdeen are not in the third round of qualifiers come full time on Thursday.

Key Facts – Aberdeen vs NSI Betting Tip

  • This will be Aberdeen’s seventh straight European campaign but they have yet to make the group stages in that time
  • NSI had a terrific 5-1 win in the first round of qualification but have never won an away European tie
  • The Dons have lost just one of their last 12 home European ties – 2-0 against Rijeka last year

The visitors do carry an attacking threat as evidenced by the five goals they scored last week. But they have also conceded plenty in recent European games. Aberdeen may not be free-scoring domestically but they scored five at the same stage last season. A similar number of goals should be expected in this one.
