Aberdeen Preview – Can McInnes’ men get off to a winning start?
Before the 2019-20 Scottish Premiership season ended abruptly back in March, Aberdeen were unbeaten in three in all competitions, beating Hibernian 3-1 at home in league action in their last competitive matchup. The Dons went on to finish in fourth, winning 12, drawing nine and losing nine to pick up 45 points.
Derek McInnes has done a fine job at Pittodrie since taking over, turning Aberdeen into a consistently strong outfit. They picked up seven wins on home turf last term, with just Celtic, Rangers and Livingston claiming more home victories in the Premiership. Aberdeen are also still in the Scottish FA Cup, where they will face holders Celtic at Hampden Park in the semi-finals.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were well and truly in the Premiership title race in the first half of the season last year. However, like the campaign before, the Gers ran out of steam in the second half, eventually losing out to champions Celtic. The league ended prematurely, but the Teddy Bears were 13 points behind their rivals in March.
Despite picking up an impressive 21 wins from 29 league fixtures, Rangers were well behind the Celts in the end. Nevertheless, it was another season of promise for the Gers, who dropped points in just eight games, scored 64 times and shipped only 19 goals.

Rangers had an excellent pre-season campaign, winning four out of four. The Glasgow side beat Olympique Lyonnais, Nice and Coventry City (all 2-0) as well as thumping fellow Premiership side Motherwell 4-0 at Ibrox Stadium. The Gers also have the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Bayer Leverkusen on the horizon.
