A battle-weary and increasingly forlorn Arsenal outfit make the difficult trip to Milan for the first leg of their round of 16 clash against AC Milan in the Europa League, on the back of some recent disastrous results, and the pressure upon manager Arsene Wenger is increasing by the minute amidst supporter unrest.
By contrast, AC Milan manager, Gennaro Gattuso, is receiving the plaudits for helping to inspire the ‘sleeping giant’ of Italian football from its slumbers to becoming a force to be reckoned with, not only on the domestic Serie A stage, but also on the european front as well.
Milan have won their last six matches on the trot in all competitions, as well as going on a 13-match unbeaten run overall, prior to this important round of 16 first leg. The Italian outfit have also suffered just one defeat from their last 21 on home turf at this level, and will be extremely hard to break down at their Stadio Giuseppe Meazza I fancy.
Arsenal head into this first leg in poor form as they’ve lost their last four matches in all competitions; a second leg defeat at home to Ostersunds in the previous round of the Europa League started the alarm bells ringing, even though The Gunners had all but secured the tie by winning 3-0 away in Sweden in the first leg.
Back-to-back defeats to Manchester City in the League Cup final and then in the Premier League were then further exacerbated by a 2-1 loss away at unfancied Brighton, as the pressure continues to pile up upon Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal fans groups are voting overwhelmingly for Wenger to be sacked, and to make matters worse, Arsenal will be without the services of strikers Lacazette and Aubemeyang for this first leg, with Wellbeck expected to fill the breach.
This could be another miserable outing for Wenger and Arsenal here.
