Preview: The first Milan Derby of the 2019/20 Serie A season will take place this weekend. AC Milan are the designated home side at the San Siro but go into this game seventh in the standings, after collecting six points from their opening three fixtures. Their opponents, meanwhile, are at the very top of the pile and will be protecting the only remaining perfect record in the league, as Inter Milan bid to make it four wins out of four domestically. Which Milanese outfit will claim early bragging rights?

AC Milan Preview – Rossoneri to avenge last season’s Milan Derby woes?

Following the Rossoneri in Serie A this season hasn’t been the most exhilarating from a neutral standpoint, with their Expected Goals averages (xGF1.30 and 0.70xGA) accurately mirroring the football on the pitch. Chances have been at a premium, which would explain a paltry return of two goals from their opening three matches (W2 L1), but this has been compensated by a well-drilled defence that has allowed very little to trouble Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks.

The sum of all this has been six points from a possible nine, with a narrow defeat to Udinese on the opening weekend seemingly put to bed with back-to-back victories over Brescia (1-0) and Hellas Verona (0-1). The early theme is there for all to see – very few goals and 1-0 scorelines. Under 1.5 Match Goals is a best-priced 47/20 (Unibet), while a third consecutive 1-0 victory for AC Milan has a fair amount of appeal at 10/1 (BetVictor).

Obviously, victory by any scoreline would suffice as far as manager Marco Giampaolo is concerned, whose team would move level on points with their Milanese neighbours should they claim maximum points this weekend. Having claimed all three points in four of their previous five home Serie A matches (W4 D1), the omens would appear strong for AC Milan – though it was their fierce rivals who last inflicted a league defeat on them, when winning 3-2 back in March.

Moreover, recent meetings show only one win in the last ten head-to-head encounters for AC Milan (W1 D5 L4).

Romelu Lukaku First Goalscorer

Inter Milan Preview – Flawless Inter seeking third Milan Derby victory in a row?

Under the staunch taskmaster of Antonio Conte, Inter Milan are being billed as the league’s best bet to topple perennial champions Juventus. It might be too soon for that to occur this season but a flawless start will have done little to curb enthusiasm. No team has been able to live with them nor match them so far, with the Nerazzurri seeking to maintain the only 100% record in Serie A when they contest a fixture they won home and away last term.

The season begun in emphatic fashion: a 4-0 thrashing of newly-promoted Lecce, with their big-money signing of the summer, Romelu Lukaku, opening his account. The former Manchester United forward would follow that up with the winner from the penalty spot away to Cagliari (1-2) before a solitary effort from midfielder Stefano Sensi settled matters against Udinese (1-0) last time out. Another Inter win with Lukaku on the scoresheet is 13/5 (PaddyPower).

If the standards had been raised this season, then they well and truly dropped in midweek as Inter were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Czech champions Slavia Prague at home. It was a game they would dominate for the first 45 minutes, creating a number of good openings, only to fall behind in the second period which they would spend largely chasing the game in search of a positive outcome. Their perseverance did pay off but they may well feel the effects of those efforts in the latter stages of this game. Inter Milan/Draw is 14/1 (Bet365).

AC Milan V Inter Milan Key Facts:

  • AC Milan are unbeaten in their last five Serie A home games (W4 D1), since losing 2-3 to Inter Milan in March.
  • Inter Milan are the only side in Serie A to have won all of their opening three games.
  • In last season’s league meetings, Inter Milan prevailed on both occasions to win 1-0 as the home side and 2-3 as the visiting team.

Betting Summary

After what was a disappointing start initially, AC Milan have rallied to win successive games. Neither were the most convincing, with goals still very much a scarcity, but some momentum has been built and they will be keen to sustain it past this weekend. No defeat in their last five home Serie A games, winning the previous four on the spin, is a huge positive, although Inter Milan were the last team to inflict a home defeat on them back in March.

The last ten head-to-head meetings show just one defeat for Inter Milan (W4 D5 L1), who were 1-0 and 2-3 victors in the two Milan Derbies last season. They are also the form team of the two, winning all three matches to date – the only team to do so. Drawing with Slavia Prague in midweek was obviously a big disappointment but it should only be a minor setback under a manager who won’t allow for complacency to creep in.

I quite like the look of Inter here. Their process has been very impressive (xGF:1.60 and xGA: 0.50), much better than their opponents who have laboured to both their victories thus far and are still to establish any rhythm in the attacking third. Both defences have excelled in these early few games but I fancy the Nerazzurri to be the ones celebrating a low-scoring success. Inter Milan to Win & Under 2.5 Goals appeals at 7/2 (PaddyPower).
