Preview: At the San Siro on Monday, AC Milan will welcome a Bologna side against whom they inflicted their biggest margin of victory on during last season’s corresponding fixture in Milan. Can we expect a repeat of the 5-1 scoreline here in July?

AC Milan Preview – Ibrahimovic & Company to pick up where they left off?

The Rossoneri made a big impression in the closing stages of 2019-20 and are worth keeping a very keen eye on in the season ahead. That there is a greater sense of continuity and stability about the club now, having committed both the manager, Stefano Pioli, and veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to new deals, should also benefit the team heading into a campaign where a top-six finish has to be the minimum aim.

The biggest transformation occurred during post-lockdown. Put simply, AC Milan returned a different animal. They secured one fewer win (9) during this period than from their previous 25 Serie A matches (10) to finish unbeaten in thirteen (W9 D3). If that weren’t nearly impressive enough, they did so whilst playing some swashbuckling football, scoring goals at a rate (2.69) comfortably more than two per game.

Milan didn’t have it easy during post-lockdown either. Within three days they had beaten both Lazio (0-3) and Juventus (4-2) by a 7-2 aggregate, while Atalanta (1-1), Napoli (2-2) or Roma (2-0) only enjoyed varying degrees of success against them. Pioli would also oversee a 5-1 victory at the San Siro over Bologna on 18 July, one of five successive home victories for this suddenly vibrant Rossoneri outfit.

AC Milan & Both To Score

Bologna Preview – Musa Barrow carrying Rossoblu hopes in 2020-21?

Whereas their opposite numbers negotiated the Serie A restart in inspired form, the same could not be said about a Bologna side that begun this frantic period promisingly enough but would quickly run out of steam. Seven points from their initial four post-lockdown fixtures included eye-catching victories away in Sampdoria and Inter Milan. What followed, however, was a desperate run consisting of one win in the final eight games.

In the end, Bologna seemed relieved at the sound of the final whistle that blew on their final league game of 2019-20 – a 1-1 draw with Torino that, had it followed the path Expected Goals (BOL 0.82 – 1.89) suggested it should have, could so easily have been a fourth loss across their final five matches. This after losing all three previous away encounters by an aggregate of 1-10, with one of them at AC Milan (5-1).

The off-season was very much needed therefore. Some much needed respite and a clean slate. Bologna finished last season in 12th, which was respectable, and another mid-table finish appears the limit of their ambitions this time around. The return of Musa Barrow, though, is a big coup for the club. The Gambian international netted nine from just 16 appearances while on loan with the Rossoblu from Atalanta last term.

AC Milan Vs Bologna Betting Advice

The off-season hasn’t appeared to have unduly halted the AC Milan express. The Rossoneri, who finished last season’s Serie A campaign unbeaten in thirteen in a run boasting nine victories and a regular dosage of goals, scored at least three times in each of their four summer friendlies. This before easing to a 2-0 victory in Ireland on Thursday against Shamrock Rovers in a Europa League qualifier.

AC Milan Vs Bologna – Key Facts

  • Each of AC Milan’s last four Serie A wins on home soil featured a minimum of three goals in the match. Among them July’s 5-1 thrashing of Bologna.
  • Bologna finished the 2019-20 Serie A season with one win from their final eight matches, having also lost their final three away match-ups by a combined aggregate of 1-10.
  • AC Milan last lost a Serie A encounter with Bologna in 2016 (1-0 at San Siro). They’ve since won eight of nine subsequent league meetings, including the most recent three.

As far as we know, Bologna have only played the two friendlies this summer. They netted twice and won only once, versus inferior opposition no less. Meanwhile last season ended in dismal fashion with four defeats in eight, with the most emphatic of them a 5-1 hammering at the San Siro to AC Milan. I’d be surprised if the margin was so great on this occasion although I still expect another reasonably straightforward success for a Rossoneri side seemingly reborn. 3-1 AC Milan.
