Preview: With a first Scudetto in ten years seemingly out of reach, a successful season for AC Milan now rests on securing a place in the top four. The Rossoneri are without a win at San Siro in four attempts though, providing hope of a repeat of last season’s 2-1 victory in this fixture for Genoa.

AC Milan – Rossoneri lost their way at San Siro?

It is often repeated that anything can happen in football. While this is true to an extent, only a capitulation of epic proportions would enable an inconsistent chasing pack to catch Inter Milan who have established an 11-point lead. There are only 24 points up for grabs – likely too few to ensure a genuine title race breaks out, but plenty for a compelling end to the season in the battle for the top four.

With eight rounds left, AC Milan (W19 D6 L5) have it in their own hands. The Rossoneri last turned out in the Champions League in 2013/14 but are presently on course to make a long-awaited return. Perched in second, Milan hold a four point cushion on fifth place Napoli, the Partenopei responsible for inflicting a 1-0 defeat on 14 March which remains the sole loss in the last seven matchdays for Stefano Pioli’s side.

Since succumbing to the men from Naples, Milan have responded encouragingly by collecting seven of the following nine points on offer: 3-2 and 3-1 victories away to Fiorentina and Parma sandwiching a 1-1 draw with Sampdoria at San Siro. These results continued a trend, meanwhile, which has seen Milan win each of their past four league fixtures on the road but none of the last four on home soil (D2 L2).

Genoa – Grifone ambling towards finishing line?

That the current bottom three sides in Serie A are hopelessly out of form has been to the great relief of Genoa (W7 D11 L12). Having appeared home and hosed at one stage, starting the year with four wins out of six, the Rossoblu are now 13th, ten points clear of danger despite a worrying run of one win – coming from behind to beat second from bottom Parma – in their last nine league matches.

On a more encouraging note, it is only four losses in sixteen Serie A outings in 2021 (W5 D7 L4). All four coming against top-eight opposition, emphasising their ability to grind out positive results against the lesser sides. Unfortunately, this is not one of those fixtures, and it is telling that their record this term when facing the traditional ‘big seven’ reads as one win and seven losses from eleven such encounters.

Meanwhile last week’s 3-1 loss in Turin to Juventus made it four points and just the three goals scored in their past five away Serie A matches (W1 D1 L3). Yet Gianluca Scamacca’s consolation at Allianz Stadium ensured Genoa found the net for the fourth league game running, equalling their longest scoring streak of the season. A positive omen perhaps, as they look to repeat the 2-1 victory at San Siro from last term.

AC Milan Vs Genoa Betting Advice

Three points went the way of Genoa when these sides last met in Milan, with the visitors that day going in at the break two goals to the good. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would pull one back but the hosts were unable to find a leveller as Il Grifone recorded their second win at the San Siro in six visits (D1 L3). The current form of the two teams, however, makes it difficult to predict how this later renewal will pan out.

AC Milan Vs Genoa – Key Facts:

  • In last season’s corresponding fixture, a 2-1 victory for Genoa made it two wins in their last six visits (D1 L3) to the San Siro when facing AC Milan.
  • Neither side are an ideal form, though. AC Milan currently winless in four at home (D2 L2) while Genoa have lost three of the last four (W1) on the road.
  • The points were shared earlier in the season following a 2-2 draw at Genoa‘s Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Both these teams have now scored in four of their past five Serie A meetings.

Genoa arrive in Milan on the back of three losses, against similar opposition in the shape of Inter, Juventus and Roma, in their previous four away league games. However, AC Milan are without a win as hosts in four (D2 L2). The Rossoneri invariably score, though, doing so 87% of the time this season and in all but one of the last seven matches. So I like the look of goals, with Genoa bidding to score for the fifth Serie A game in a row.
