Preview: Two of European football’s most decorated clubs head into the final round of Group B fixtures in entirely contrasting predicaments. For AC Milan, only a win will suffice if they are to continue playing Champions League football into the New Year. But for this record-breaking Liverpool side, there is the potential for history to be made at San Siro.

AC Milan – Halting winless run in Milan a necessity?

A first victory of this 2021-22 Champions League group stage, courtesy of debutant Junior Messias’ maiden strike at 30 years of age, has handed the seven time champions of Europe a precious lifeline going into the final set of fixtures. After three successive losses, AC Milan have recovered to take four points from the last six on offer and will qualify for the next round with a win over an already qualified Liverpool.

However, the Italians, who now lead the way atop Serie A following Saturday’s comfortable 2-0 scoreline at home to Salernitana, must also pray the other game in the group ends in a draw. Still, the very fact they are alive in this section is a minor miracle in itself. Their draw with Porto on Matchday 4 saw them halt a five-game losing streak in this very competition, although they remain winless in five in Milan (D3 L2).

Key Stat: Last season’s 1-0 loss at San Siro to Manchester United in the Europa League Round of 16 means AC Milan have been beaten five of the past six times they welcomed English visitors to Milan.

Liverpool – Reds seeking perfect conclusion to Group B?

England’s most successful club in Europe could become the country’s first to emerge from any group stage boasting an immaculate record. Jurgen Klopp’s charges have been rampant in Group B, winning all five encounters while scoring at least twice in each and fifteen in total, for an average of three-per-game. So while their passage is safely assured, they can still head to Milan with no shortage of incentive.

The Reds prepared for their trip to Italy with an attritional 1-0 victory away to Wolves on Saturday, in which Divock Origi dispatched a 94th minute winner that briefly sent the Reds top of the Premier League. It was the first occasion in 19 competitive matches they hadn’t netted more than once, though it did extend their winning run to five, scoring 15 for the loss of a single goal since a 3-2 defeat at West Ham on 7 November.

Key Stat: Liverpool are yet to drop a point in Group, winning all four group matches thus far; not only did they score twice in each victory but Mohamed Salah was among their goalscorers in all but their 2-0 home win against Atletico Madrid.

AC Milan Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

With no inclination as to the strength of the visiting line up, it is best swerving the match odds market for now. A full-strength Liverpool team would likely prove too strong for AC Milan whose records when hosting English opposition has been abysmal in recent times, losing five of the last six such matches. Furthermore, Liverpool are reliable travellers in Europe, clocking up eight victories across eleven prior away outings.

AC Milan Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Whereas hosts AC Milan (W1 D1 L3) know they must win to stand any chance of progressing, Liverpool (W5) are guaranteed to finish on top on Group B.
  • AC Milan scored twice against Liverpool as they lost 3-2 at Anfield on Matchday 1, but haven’t scored more than once in their four subsequent group games (3 in total).
  • Liverpool have scored on two or more occasions across all five group games. The Reds are also seeking to extend their positive recent away record in the competition (W8 D1 L2).

We have to suspect Jurgen Klopp makes wholesale changes with a view to protecting the bulk of his first-team ahead of English football’s notorious winter schedule. This plays into AC Milan’s hands, of course, but a fringe Liverpool side has taken them to the League Cup quarter-finals this season. Milan scored exactly one goal in two Group B home games so far, while Liverpool netted three in Spain and five in Portugal.
