Preview: Propping up Group B are AC Milan. The Italians are the only team in the group yet to pick up a point, placing them in precarious territory ahead of Wednesday’s must-win San Siro encounter with FC Porto. The Portuguese side prevailing 1-0 when the sides went at it in Portugal a fortnight ago.

AC Milan – Rossoneri struggling to replicate league form in Europe?

A first loss in nine visits to Portugal, losing 1-0 at the Estadio do Dragao on Matchday 3, has the seven-time continental champions on the brink of elimination. Stefano Pioli’s side are still to register a point in this their first group stage participation for eight years, setting some unwanted history in the process. With this the very first time in their history they have gone into the fourth group game having lost their opening three fixtures.

The Rossoneri have now lost five consecutive matches in this competition, while winning just two of the last ten as hosts (W5 L3). Trends that must be bucked if they are to make up a four point gap on both their Portuguese guests as well as Atletico Madrid. Spirits should be high, however, following Sunday’s 2-1 win away to AS Roma which kept them top of the table in Serie A after an unbeaten 11-game start.

Key Stat: Sunday’s victory in Rome against AS Roma earned AC Milan their third straight win in all competitions, but in doing so they conceded for the seventh game in eight.

FC Porto – Another long night awaits in Italy?

Only Barcelona and Real Madrid have featured in the group stage of the Champions League on more occasions than FC Porto. Each of the club’s previous four participations, meanwhile, saw them reach the knockout rounds. And they are well placed to do so again, having accrued as many points (four; W1 D1 L1) through their opening three encounters as second place Atletico Madrid.

A win in Milan would set them up nicely going into difficult games at home to Atletico Madrid and away at Liverpool. That is easier said than done, of course. For while last season’s runners-up in Portugal boast an excellent recent record on the road in this competition, their sole loss across their last five away fixtures did come in Italy (3-2 to Juventus) where they have won only once in nine visits (D2 L6).

Key Stat: All but one of FC Porto’s last nine matches in all competitions (W7 L2) seen a minimum of three goals, Sergio Conceicao’s men warming up for the trip to Milan by putting four past Boavista in a 4-1 victory on Saturday.

AC Milan Vs Porto Betting Advice

All the pressure ahead of this fixture falls squarely on the hosts. Four teams during this season’s group stage remain pointless through the opening three rounds. Among them an AC Milan side whose form in Europe falls in sharp contrast to their imperious exploits domestically. Stefano Pioli’s team sit atop Serie A, having won 10 of 11 league games so far this term. This is must-win for them and I expect them to oblige.

AC Milan Vs FC Porto – Key Facts:

  • Victory for Porto (W1 D1 L1) over the Italians in Portugal last time out has the Portuguese side in third place in Group B, level on points with Atletico Madrid and four above AC Milan (L3).
  • AC Milan have now their past five matches in the Champions League. Ominously then, FC Porto arrive in Milan having lost one of their last five on the road in the competition.
  • The Rossoneri drew a blank when these sides met a fortnight ago, but don’t expect a repeat as that was the first occasion this season (14 games) in which they didn’t find the net.

Not that I expect Porto to roll over. This is a team enjoying a stellar campaign in Portugal (W8 D2) and which has one loss to their name across their last five Champions League away games. That was in Italy, though, where they were defeated on six of nine prior visits. AC Milan are getting players back from injury though, with none more influential than Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is set to earn his first start in this season’s tournament.
