AFC Wimbledon Preview

It may be an imitation of the former club, but there is plenty to be said that AFC Wimbledon retain the soul of the Wimbledon who were responsible for one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history when defeating Liverpool 1-0 to lift the trophy in 1988. The current manager of AFC Wimbledon was part of that squad and Wally Downes will be attempting make some history as manager now. Downes took over the managerial reins from the long-serving Neil Ardley at the beginning of December. Wimbledon are currently rooted to the bottom of League One and have a huge battle on their hands to retain their status in that division. Saturday acts as a distraction for them from league duty, though, and it’s one they should savour as this version of the club have never reached this stage of the competition before. The win over fellow League One outfit Fleetwood Town in the last round was a typical cup tie with a last-minute goal for Wimbledon securing a 3-2 win.

West Ham Preview

January has been a trying month for West Ham supporters, more so with events off the park than on it and the continuing transfer saga of Marko Arnautovic who has been constantly linked with a move to the Chinese Super League. At the moment it’s looking unlikely the Austrian will be departing the club this transfer window but we know how quickly things can change. It will be interesting to see if he’s in the squad for the match on Saturday but that aside, it’s a game West Ham will be big favourites to win and rightly so. The Hammers league campaign has been probably as we’d expect – mid-table form with some really positive results and performances interspersed with some rubbish ones. A routine 2-0 win at home to Birmingham in the last round has led them to this stage and with a favourable looking draw it could that West Ham fancy their chances of a an extended cup run – something that they have managed just once in the last decade, and that was the quarter final stage three years ago.

AFC Wimbledon v West Ham Betting Advice

Ironically enough, having never faced each other before, this will be the second meeting this season between AFC Wimbledon and West Ham. The clubs were drawn together in the EFL Cup and West Ham were comfortable 3-1 winners. Saturday’s tie will be played at the same venue and the majority are expecting a similar outcome, although the hosts are under new management of course.

West Ham made significant changes for the last round and although they’ll be on their travels this time, they have a big squad packed full of players who will be eager to stake a claim for a more regular place in the team. Wimbledon, as alluded to above, are struggling in League One and relegation is looking ever more likely with each passing week. Their only win in 2019 came in the last round and they will be up against it to add to that when the Hammers come calling. The visitors negotiated their third round tie with minimum fuss and they can do so again by winning this match by at least two goals.
