Afghanistan Preview – Can Afghanistan end drought?
Although Afghanistan earned a worthy point in a 1-1 draw away at Bangladesh last time out, they ended up dropping down into 5th place in Group E and find themselves seven points adrift of their 2nd placed opponents, Oman.
With just two group matches remaining, Afghanistan have blown their chances of making it into the next round of World Cup qualifiers and their situation hasn’t been helped by failing to win any of their subsequent four matches after recording a 1-0 home win over Bangladesh.
Subsequent defeats to Oman 3-0 away and a 1-0 loss at home to Qatar have been major body-blows to Afghanistan’s chances of a top two finish and they may well struggle against Oman once again on Friday evening.
Oman Preview – Can Oman bounce back?
Although they occupy 2nd place in Group E and are 10 points behind the group leaders, Qatar, Oman look set to progress through to the next qualifying stages in the Asian World Cup qualifiers as Qatar are actually a ‘shadow’ nation and automatically qualify as the hosts anyway.
Oman lost 1-0 to Qatar last time out but they’d previously posted back-to-back wins against Bangladesh 4-1 and India 1-0 and they hold a commanding six-point cushion over 3rd placed India heading into this Friday night clash in Doha.
Oman have also held the upper hand over Afghanistan in previous exchanges and look set to get the better of their opponents again here.
