AGF Aarhus Preview – Hosts to finally secure first win of the season?
Early days it remains but the signs are already ominous as far as Aarhus are concerned. After five matches played, the club are one of only three (the other two being Esbjerg and Silkeborg) still to record a win in this season’s SuperLiga in Denmark. Those same two teams are also the only thing preventing Aarhus from occupying last place in the table, with their total of two points only good enough for 12th position as things stand.
The complexion could change for the worse by the time kick-off time comes round, with this being the final fixture of matchday six with. Therefore the prospect of them starting this match bottom of the league table remains plausible. That is unless they can defy some drastic early season form which has seen them fail to win any of their opening five games (D2 L3). Just one of those was a home fixture, though, losing 1-0 at home a Midtjylland side that finished 2018/19 in second position.
The crux of the problem so far has been goals, and more to the point a lack of them. Only an Esjberg outfit directly below them in the league have scored fewer than the three of Aarhus, who are still to manage more than one goal in any game. Although the defence has maintained its side of the bargain, helping to ensure every game has been close even in those three defeats to Midtjylland (0-1), Copenhagen (2-1) and Lyngby (2-1).
AC Horsens Preview – Visitors to maintain flawless record on their travels?
Going against the norm this season are Horsens, the team which, paradoxically, has made a mixed yet consistent start in the 2019/20 Danish SuperLiga. Five matches into the season has produced a couple of victories and three defeats (W2 L3), but all three of their losses were recorded at home while on the road they can boast of a 100% record. Which means they will be seeking a third away win in a row here, in a fixture that brought them varied success in the last campaign.
Six points from a possible fifteen is hardly spectacular, but it is still form that is a great deal better than their opponents. A 2-0 defeat at home to Midtjylland last time out maintained their zero percent strike rate at home so far this season, following early losses to Nordsjaelland (0-3) and FC Copenhagen (0-2). Away from home, meanwhile, they begun with an impressive rout of Silkeborg (0-3) before producing a significant upset at Brondby to win 2-1.
So, on current form, Horsens are not to be dismissed lightly here. In fact, their total of five goals scored from just two away fixtures is more than the sum total that their opponents have managed in all five of their league games combined up until now. Not that this is an entirely new revelation, as last season Horsens were also a completely different animal when on their travels: of their eight league victories, six were obtained on the road (W6 D2 L8), which includes a 2-1 win at Aarhus during the regular season before losing 3-1 at the same venue during the Relegation Round.

A start to the season comprising of zero wins and very few goals scored is, unsurprisingly, struggling to inspire me here, ahead of what should be an eminently winnable fixture. On the last occasion Aarhus hosted Horsens, they ran out 3-1 winners, but that was one of two meetings at home in the last campaign with the other resulting in a 2-1 loss.
Hopeless at home, magnificent away. From no points and not a single goal scored at home, to six points out of six and five goals netted on the road. Horsens are a peculiar side, that is for sure, but their record last season would suggest this is no flash in the pan; this same team earned six of its eight league victories in 2018/29 from matches played away from home.
While Horsens have found themselves in amongst the goals away from home this season, this is, in actual fact, slightly out of character for them. That is because last season seen them only manage 14 away goals altogether, which was less than one per game (0.88). Therefore I feel this could be a low-scoring affair, especially with Aarhus looking very blunt in attack so far – they’ve only netted three times in their five fixtures combined and don’t tend to concede very many either.
