AIK Preview – Can AIK return to winning ways having taken just two points from their last four games?

It’s been a season to forget so far for AIK who find themselves in 11th spot and with only three wins from their first 12 games. It’s a far cry from their success in 2018 when they won the title. This time around, unless they drastically improve their form, they will be looking over their shoulders this season and attempting to avoid the drop. Heading into Thursday’s game and AIK are just three points outside the relegation zone and two away from the relegation playoff position.

Their recent run of gaining only two points from their previous four games does little to inspire confidence that they will turn things around anytime soon.

 

AIK’s only home win so far this season came in the middle of July when defeating Sirius 1-0. They have since been beaten by champions Djurgarden. Their only other defeat at home was a 4-1 thrashing against the current leaders Norrkoping. Add in draws with Malmo and Falkenberg and it’s been a very mixed bag lacking any consistency.

Bartosz Grzelak – the former assistant manager of Sweden’s U21 side – was recently appointed as boss of AIK following the dismissal of Rikard Norling. It’s the first managerial change in four years at the club and the new guy will be hoping to build on his first match which ended in a goalless draw.

Elfsborg Preview – Are Elfsborg set for all three point to keep them on the tails of the leaders?

Whilst their opponents have found this season a struggle, Elfsborg have been a surprise package and will travel to Stockholm on Thursday in third position (at the time of writing). Jimmy Thelin’s team had a strong end to last season, eventually finishing in eighth, and have so far been able to transfer that form into this new campaign. They head a pack of chasing teams looking to close on the top two who they themselves are four points behind.

A title challenge may well be beyond them but Elfsborg will be looking to maintain their current position and push for Europe if possible.

The key to Elfsborg’s success so far is the points they have been able to accumulate on their travels. No team has picked up more on the road to this point as they and Malmo have won three and drawn two from their first six away games. The loss (6-0 to Hacken) is the only game where Elsborg have not taken any points thus far.

Young striker Jesper Karlsson is in excellent form at the moment with four goals in his last three games and on course for a very productive season.

 

This is a fixture that traditionally brings with it goals. 12 of the last 16 have seen both teams scoring and those 16 games have produced 51 goals. It’s the former of those trends I’m interested in tomorrow. Three of AIK’s last five home games have featured this and the same has happened in three of Elfsborg’s last five away matches.
