Airdrie Preview – Can Airdrie upset their local rivals to keep qualification hopes alive?
Airdrie reached the Championship promotion playoff final last season but were well beaten by Greenock Morton and are planning for another year in League One. Before that campaign starts the Diamonds have two games left in their League Cup section which has been somewhat disappointing to date. Matches against Annan Athletic and Queens Park have finished as draws after 90 minutes with Airdrie winning one and losing the other on penalties. That leaves them with three points and more importantly, still in with a chance of qualifying.
Motherwell was always likely going to be the most difficult of their group opponents whilst they then face another challenging game when travelling to play Queen of the South on Saturday. It’s likely they need to win both games if they are to finish top and guarantee top spot.
Ian Murray will more than likely be focussing on using these next couple of games as prep for the upcoming league campaign. He will be hoping to at least match last season’s efforts but in what is a very open division then will see a potential title challenge as a possibility.
A key cog in achieving that objective is Thomas Robert. The French wide player has attracted interest of some big clubs after his first season in Scotland but remains at Airdrie for now, although he has yet to feature in either of their League Cup matches.
Motherwell Preview – Will Motherwell make it three straight wins and book their place in the next round?
Graham Alexander is due to embark on his first full season in charge of Motherwell and they look like going into the league campaign in positive mood following their participation in this competition. ‘Well made it two wins from as many matches against Queen of the South on Saturday despite going down 2-0 in the first half. That comeback victory followed a 1-0 win away to Queens Park.
It means they now sit top of the section and potentially one win away from clinching qualification. The club have recent experience of success in the League Cup, too, having made it all the way to the final in 2017.

Alexander is continuing to build a squad for the new season with a spate of arrivals over the last week. Kaiyne Woolery joined from Tranmere Rovers and got his first goal for his new club in the win against Queen of the South.
Tony Watt was also on the scoresheet in that game and he is undoubtedly one of Motherwell’s most important players. He will be wanting to better his tally from last season but his overall play is a big asset to the team’s attack.
