Ajax Preview – Are Ajax set to continue their domination of Dutch football?

2018/19 was a season that anyone connected with Ajax is unlikely to forget. Having not won the Eredivisie since 2014 heading into the last campaign, a title win was long overdue for the Amsterdam club. Scoring 119 goals in 34 games was the biggest factor in them pipping PSV to the league, finishing three points ahead. Ajax also added the cup to take a clean sweep of the major prizes in the Netherlands. It’s one thing being successful domestically, but Ajax also went close to replicating some of their European success of the past. But for a last minute goal from Tottenham, Ajax would have reached the Champions League final.

At the centre of all their achievements last season was the style they achieved it with. One of their most talented groups 0f players in their history contributed to that success. As is the way with the club these days, a lot of those players have either moved on or could yet before the close of the window. The challenge for Erik ten Hag is trying to ensure they remain dominant in the Netherlands without some of their stars from last season. This is the club’s model and reinforcements have been brought in to help him succeed with that. Somewhat surprisingly, Hakim Ziyech is still an Ajax player heading into the last week of July.

PSV Preview – Can PSV defeat Ajax and win third Super Cup in five years

Achieving a total of 83 points would usually be good enough to secure the Eredivisie title, but it wasn’t last season. In what was Mark Van Bommel’s maiden season in charge of PSV, they could hardly have done much more in their title defence. In the end, the Eindhoven club were just undone by a better team. Due to finishing second, PSV have already started their qualification for this season’s Champions League. The first leg of their second qualifying round against Basel ended in a 3-2 win with the second leg to come in Switzerland next week. It’s a narrow lead but it could have been much more problematic with them scoring two goals in the final minutes. The second leg is set to be another dramatic affair.

Their impressive young striker Donyell Malen scored one of the three goals in midweek. Having burst on to the scene last season, the Dutchman will be hoping to improve his goals haul this time around. One of the club’s marquee summer signings, Bruma, was also on the scoresheet against Basel. Big things are expected of the Portuguese winger at his new club.

Key-Facts – Ajax v PSV

  • Ajax were the dominant team in Dutch football last season and came within a couple of minutes of reaching the Champions League final in a remarkable campaign
  • PSV finished the season empty handed but they played their part in a tremendous title race, losing out by just three points in the end
  • The sides met in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup earlier this year and it was a resounding 4-0 win for Hibs at Easter Road

Ajax v PSV Betting Advice

These two teams are the best in the Netherlands by some distance. It’s fitting they are partaking in the season’s curtain raiser. It’s especially so because of the epic title race they competed in last season. What is surprising is that this will be Ajax’ first appearance in this game since 2014, whilst PSV suffered an upset of sorts in last year’s game – losing to Feyenoord. It may be a somewhat glorified warm-up game in name, but when these two  powerhouses of Dutch football come together it is never a friendly.

The last time these two teams met in this game it finished in a 4-2 victory to PSV back in 2012. It would be no surprise to see another game full of goals considering how prolific both teams are. PSV have a massive game to come next midweek which may just tip this match in favour of Ajax. A win for last year’s double winners and there to be over 2.5 goals in it is the selection.
