Ajax Preview – Can champions Ajax bounce back from last week’s defeat and get what would be a huge three points?

Following their exploits domestically and in Europe last season, Ajax are suffering something of a reality check this time around. Erik ten Hag’s men were seconds away from reaching the Champions League final, at the same time clearing all before them in the Netherlands. This time around they have been eliminated from Europe’s premier club competition at the group stage and exited the Europa League in disappointing fashion at the hands of Getafe in midweek.
Now it’s all about retaining their Dutch title but they have a big fight on their hands to do that.

Ajax are three points clear of AZ having lost two of their last four in the league – both have which have come on their travels against Groningen and Heracles. It means they have now dropped as many points this season than they did the whole of last.
Whilst their struggles are there for all to see on the road, Ajax’s home form has been excellent as we have come to expect. The champions have won 11 and lost one in the league – scoring 40 (a league high) and conceding just six (the fewest in the Eredivisie).

Arne Slot only took over as AZ boss last summer but his impact has been instant and significant. A fourth place finish was impressive enough in the previous campaign but they were a full 18 points behind their opponents. However, it has giving Slot something to build on and they are on course for their best season since winning the league back in 2009.

The two results against the Austrian league leaders mean it is now just one win in their last five in all competitions for AZ. In terms of the Eredivisie they have won 10 of the last 15 but have lost two of their last five. Slot’s men have the best away record in the Dutch top-flight with seven wins and have already beaten Feyenoord (3-0) and PSV (4-0) on their travels.

With those results there’s no doubting their temperament or mentality for the big games and that is what awaits them on Sunday evening.
