Preview: After a 2-0 win over in Spain, Getafe are in a strong position to reach the Europa League Round of 16 at the expense of a club who made it to the final four of last season’s Champions League. Can the Johan Cruyff Arena inspire an Ajax comeback?

Ajax Preview – Can Amsterdam provide platform for another comeback?

The Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, could have few complaints with last week’s 2-0 scoreline in Madrid. His team not only soundly beaten but outfoxed and denied what could be an all-important away goal, which he could also have no complaints about considering there was to be no shot on target from the Netherlands Eredivisie champions throughout the first 90 minutes of this tie.

En route to reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, Ajax would defy the odds on more than one occasion. They even ousted another club from Madrid along the way, fighting back from losing 2-1 at home to sensationally win 4-1 at the Bernabeu and claim a memorable 5-3 aggregate victory over Real Madrid. On that basis, it would be foolish discounting them here especially with the return leg in Amsterdam.

Depending on how we spin it, they either have an outstanding chance of coming back or very little at all. Domestically, Ajax have been superb – winning 11 of 12 at home whilst averaging more than three goals a game (3.33). In Europe, though, they were found wanting more than once in their Champions League group, finishing in third in Group H largely on account of them winning only once at their Johan Cruyff Arena. Losing there to both Chelsea and Valencia without so much as scoring.

Getafe Preview – Spanish underdogs firmly in the ascendancy?

La Liga high-flyers Getafe are now in fantastic shape to become one of the final sixteen teams in the draw for the Round of 16, after goals scored late in either half secured them a 2-0 win at their Colisuem Alfonso-Perez in Madrid, Spain. Brazilian pair Deyverson and Kenedy, the latter a second-half substitute whose goal three minutes into second-half stoppage-time took a huge deflection, earning them a first-leg lead and placing them in a commanding position to progress.

Perhaps the most important aspect about last week’s victory was the accompanying clean sheet, meaning any goal in Holland would strengthen their qualification claims considerably. It was a typically robust performance from Jose Bordalas’ side, having restricted their opponents to not having a single attempt on goal throughout a scrappy affair. No doubt typified by the fact the ball spent less than 43 minutes in play – the second-lowest for this particular metric in the competition since 2009.

Those more familiar with Getafe and their antics will know that scrappy is a setting this team thrives under. So, we can therefore rest assured that Bordalas will be instructing his players to disrupt the flow of this game whenever possible. This tactic only works when you can be efficient with your chances, which they often are in fairness to them, having already secured wins in Russia and Turkey – over Krasnodar (2-1) and Trabzonspor (1-0) – during the preceding group phase. Losing only in Switzerland to FC Basel (2-1).

Ajax Vs Getafe Betting Advice

Significant improvements will be needed if Ajax are to somehow turn this around, with the performance in Spain falling well below the required standard. A high-tempo start is anticipated although this Getafe team have already shown how capable they can be at stifling the attack of the Dutch champions. The Spanish side are now into 1/6 (Betway) in the To Qualify betting, with Ajax out to 9/2 (Bet365).

Ajax Vs Getafe – Key Facts

  • Ajax registered three points from nine at home during the Champions League group phase (W1 L2), with both defeats incurred without scoring.
  • Getafe secured six points out of nine whilst on their travels during the Europa League group stage, conceding three times across said encounters.
  • The clubs are meeting each other for the first time in European competition, with the first-leg finishing 2-0 to Getafe.

Back in Holland, Ajax encounter a lot less resistance in comparison to Getafe in Spain. Therefore I am more inclined to disregard how good the host’s domestic record at home is and instead focus more on how Getafe restricted 9 of 12 teams to no more than one goal in La Liga away games this season, losing only 33% of the time in said matches. Suggesting the visitors can keep the scoring down enough to possibly sneak a positive outcome at the Johan Cruyff Arena, where Ajax won one of three in their Champions League group.
