The top two in the Eredivisie go head to head for a place in the semi-final of the Dutch Cup on Tuesday with Ajax looking to get the better of PSV in their quest to retain the trophy.

Ajax Preview – Will Ajax continue their excellent form and make it through to the semi-final?

Ajax have been imperious since coming back from two goals down at home to PSV in the club’s most recent meeting. Six straight wins, four of them away from home and beating AZ (twice), Feyenoord and Twente – all of whom are top six sides – suggest that Erik ten Hag are getting into their best form of this campaign just at the right time. Before drawing with PSV the current holders of the Dutch Cup had shown some vulnerability but they have composed themselves.

Ajax are four points clear of tomorrow’s opponents and they will be hoping to make home advantage count as they go in search of a domestic double.

It’s been far from straightforward just to reach the quarter-final stage for the Amsterdam club. Edging a nine-goal thriller to see off Utrecht earned Ajax a visit to AZ who they were neck and neck with before the season was ended prematurely last year. A goal towards the end of the first half from Zakaria Labyad was enough to get them beyond that very difficult tie.
Record signing Sebastien Haller has scored two goals since joining from West Ham in the January transfer window and he will likely start this game tomorrow having made his Ajax debut from the bench in the recent league match.

PSV Preview – Can PSV continue their progress in a competition they haven’t won since 2012?

Losing convincingly to one of your big rivals is always a test of character for a team and following a 3-1 loss away to Feyenoord at the end of January, Roger Schmidt’s men have shown resolve – bouncing back to beat Vitesse 3-0 at home the following week. It was the reaction they needed to show and keeps them in the hunt for the title with plenty of football left to play.

Attention now switches to the cup and attempting to win a competition they have under-performed in for too long.

PSV have been on the road in their first two games and although the standard of opposition has not been to the same level as Ajax, they have had to work to get past both De Graafschap and Volendam. Both of whom are in the second division.

PSV’s domestic away from has improved the longer the season has went on with three wins and that draw in Amsterdam in their last five road matches. They had previously won only two of their first six away matches in the league and will be hoping to continue that recent upturn in this encounter.

Ajax vs PSV Betting Advice

Games between these two clubs are not ones to be missed and if the meeting in the league earlier this year is anything to go by then this should be a cracker. PSV raced into a two goal lead courtesy of a double from Eran Zahavi only to relinquish the advantage and settle for a draw.

The visitors are looking for their first win in Amsterdam since 2015 so when you combine that with their poor record in the cup then they have to overcome a couple of established trends.

Key Facts – Ajax vs PSV Betting Tip

  • Ajax are on a six match winning streak since drawing with PSV earlier this year
  • PSV have had to negotiate tricky away ties against De Graafschap and Volendam to reach this stage
  • This will be the first time the teams have met in this competition since the 2006 final (Ajax won 2-1)

Despite their domination of Dutch football, this will be the first meeting in the cup since Ajax defeated PSV in the 2006 final. In their current form and with home advantage, I expect them to repeat that feat tomorrow.
