Alanyaspor Preview – League leaders to continue imperious start?

Few would have correctly predicted that come the first international break of the season it would be Alanyaspor perched highest in the Turkish Super Lig standings with a flawless record of three wins out of three. That is exactly what has transpired, though, as a team spearheaded by former Newcastle United forward Papiss Cisse set an early pace that none of their rivals could match.

The reason for highlighting the presence of Cisse in this side is because the 34-year-old is enjoying a renaissance period. The former Senegal international scored the crucial winner in a 1-0 win at Kayserispor; put his team 2-1 up en route to a 4-1 victory at home to Kasimpasa; and scored what would become the decisive third goal in a 3-2 success away to a Yeni Matatyaspor side which finished in fifth place last season.

Next up are a Fenerbahce team who have come closest to matching these early season exploits, so it will be intriguing to see how the current pacesetters match-up here. After all, Alanyaspor did finish down in ninth in 2018-19 (W12 D8 L14), and weren’t exactly at the peak of their powers come the end of the season when failing to record a win in any of their final five fixtures (D3 L2).

Nevertheless, momentum is often a crucial commodity in sport and Alanyaspor possess that in abundance at the present time. Moreover, only one league defeat at home since November (W7 D4 L1) warrants the utmost respect, as does managing to score on at least one occasion in each of their previous ten home encounters.

Fenerbahce Preview – New-look Fener targeting top spot?

It was only last month I spoke of the upheaval which was undertaken at the club during the summer. Much of the deadwood within the playing staff were justifiably moved on, replaced by several fresh and exciting additions in a bold effort by those in charge to revitalise a squad that woefully underperformed in the previous campaign. The early signs have been encouraging.

Fenerbahce were last crowned domestic champions back in 2013-14, which is a considerable drought for a club with nineteen league titles tucked away in its trophy cabinet. At no stage did they challenge for that honour last season but already, after registering seven points from the first three fixtures to stalk the league leaders in second, the prospects about a title tilt are much more positive.

Beginning with an emphatic 5-0 defeat of Gaziantep at home, Fener would then land a huge psychological blow over last season’s runners-up, coming from a goal down to record a 2-1 victory away to Istanbul Basaksehir. That particular triumph would have felt all the more sweeter what with the winning goal being struck in stoppage time. Unfortunately, though, that momentum was halted prior to the international break courtesy of a 1-1 home draw with Trabzonspor.

Furthermore, last season Fenerbahce were among the poorest travelling sides in the division. The improvements made to the squad should ensure their abject away record from 2018-19 (W3 D6 L8) is drastically bettered this time around, but these struggles on the road cannot simply be ignored either.

Alanyaspor V Fenerbahce Key Facts:

  • Alanyaspor are protecting the only 100% record remaining in the Turkish top-flight, having taken nine points from their first three matches.
  • Fenerbahce, meanwhile, have collected seven out of a possible nine points that went on offer (W2 D1).
  • Last season’s corresponding fixture finished 1-0 in favour of the home side, Alanyaspor.

Betting Summary

The only perfect record in the Turkish top-flight belongs to Alanyaspor, who deserve credit for their flawless start following three successive wins against Kayserispor (0-1), Kasimpasa (4-1) and Yeni Matatyaspor (2-3). It seems unlikely these high standards can be maintained for any considerable period but while there is momentum behind them, it would be foolish to write them off simply because one of the big boys are in town.

A revival is underway at Fenerbahce, with last season’s drastic showing no doubt proving the catalyst. Seven points from a possible nine has been a healthy enough start, after wins over Gaziantep (5-0) and Basaksehir (1-2) before a slightly disappointing draw at home to a decent Trabzonspor. Their away record last season (winning just three of seventeen on the road) has to be a significant concern, however.

Both league encounters last season were won by the home side without the visiting team getting on the scoresheet. So this could be another tight duel. At the odds, however, it might be worth taking another chance on the in-form hosts. Not only are Alanyaspor targeting a fourth consecutive league victory but they possess a forward with motivations of his own, hoping to maintain a record of scoring in every league fixture thus far.
