It’s another heavyweight clash in the second of the AFCON semi-finals with Algeria facing off against Nigeria. Both nations have had difficult routes to this stage and whoever prevails will have earned their place in the final.

Algeria Preview – Are Algeria set for a first final appearance since their victory in 1990 ?

This Algerian team stormed through the group stage winning all three matches. Djamel Belmadi – who enjoyed such a successful spell as a player – has so far being been able to get the best out of this talented group of players. And that’s been the issue over the last decade. Despite having a quality group, Algeria have under performed and failed to deliver too often. Belmadi was only appointed following their disappointing failure to reach last year’s World Cup final. The hope is they can capitalise on what has been an excellent showing so far and win these next two games.

Wins over Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania in the group stage were all achieved without conceding a goal. The significant victory is obviously over Senegal who were always fancied and are now favourites for the competition. That victory, albeit narrow, will have given this group of players the confidence that is sometimes lacking. That would have been enhanced further when seeing off Ivory Coast on penalties in the quarter finals. So often they have been the one eliminated in such circumstances so it’s possibly testament to a different mindset. The goal they conceded against Ivory Coast is the first they have allowed in the competition so far. Their 10 goals scored is also a tournament high so they are on form in both aspects of the game.

Nigeria Preview – Can Nigeria’s forwards propel them to an eighth AFCON final?

The Super Eagles are often a popular team for the occasional watchers of African football due to their flamboyant style and teams of the past. This group of players may not have the same superstars that have come and gone but they are certainly capable. Nigeria were unfortunate not to qualify from their World Cup group last year but they have kicked on once again and made it to the last four of the AFCON for the first time since winning the competition in 2013. Their route to this stage has been eventful, not least being on the receiving end of one of the shocks of the tournament when losing 2-0 to Madagascar in the group stage. The Nigerians have recovered from that tremendously well to beat Cameroon and South Africa in the knockout stage.

Nigeria’s German coach Gernot Rohr has been in charge for just under three years now. He’s popular among the players and has achieved his objective of qualifying the nation for the semi-finals. That would not make elimination any easier, however, and he will be looking for his team to continue their revival.

Key-Facts – Algeria v Nigeria

  • Algeria are one of two unbeaten sides left at this tournament and edged past Ivory Coast on penalties last time out
  • Of the four semi-finalists Nigeria are the most recent winners of the AFCON winning it in 2013
  • The winners of this game will face either Senegal or Tunisia in the same stadium where this semi-final takes place

Algeria v Nigeria Betting Advice

These two nations have already made giant strides to reach the semi-final stage of this year’s AFCON. Algeria were eliminated at the group stage two years ago whilst Nigeria never even qualified for that particular tournament. Rohr has also quelled any suggestion that his team will have an edge over their opponents coming into this game having finished above them in World Cup qualification. Algeria have shown they are a different outfit under Belmadi and are in a much more settled period.
It’s difficult to predict an open game when it comes to AFCON semi-finals but if there is going to be one then it could be between these teams. They have combined for 17 goals in the tournament so far and each have a player on three goals. Algerian’s impressive Adam Ounas and his Nigerian counterpart Odion Ighalo are joint-scorers and potential match winners for their respective teams.
Algeria are a very well balanced team and their defensive record has been great so far. Nigeria will cause them problems, however, and have scored five goals in the knockout phase alone. Both teams to score in an AFCON game of this magnitude is not often a sound bet, but I think on this occasion it represents good value.
