Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka is still going strong in the game. He is through to the second round at the Australian Open 2020 where he will face Andreas Seppi. The Italian’s form at Melbourne Park makes him a nice underdog pick for Australian Open 2020 betting..

Seppi can cause a second-round upset by sending Wawrinka packing

Italian Andreas Seppi, who is ranked 85th in the world, should be able to make a decent fist of things in this contest against Wawrinka. What has some appeal from the underdog perspective is that the Italian has consistently been past the second round in each of the last five Australian Open appearances.

Granted, he has never been past the fourth round of a Slam and at this stage his career you wouldn’t expect him to do so. But the 35 year old has put together a little bit of match sharpness this season with appearances at Bendigo and then Auckland. He still has a bit of scrap about him and could be in this match.

At last year’s Australian Open he powered his way past Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second round in straight sets. Obviously Wawrinka is a tough competitor to face. But Seppi’s win rate at the Australian Open is better than at any other Grand Slam. So that suggests that he is a bigger threat at the start of the year than at any other time. Seppi stepped straight into form at Melbourne Park with a first round victory over Miomir Kecmanovic.

Wawrinka’s second round slips at Melbourne Park

Former Australian Open champion Stan Warinka has gone home at the second round stage in his last two appearances at Melbourne Park. In fact, in four of his last eight Grand Slam appearances, that has been the point at which he has packed his bags. The title at Melbourne Park that the Swiss player took was back in 2014.

Wawrinka is ranked 15th in the world currently. He took part in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in early January and won two matches to reach the semi finals. He was beaten by the world number 81 Corentin Moutet there in straight sets at that stage. He did drop a set in his opening fixture of the Australian Open 2020, taking a 3-1 win over Dhamir Dzumhur.

Andreas Seppi vs Stan Wawrinka Betting Advice

Italian Andreas Seppi has a decent enough track record at the Australian Open in the early stages at least. He is not going to be a threat in terms of winning at title of course. However, that aside, he Italian may just be able to buck the trend of losses against Wawrinka in an even contest.

Key Facts – Andreas Seppi vs Stan Wawrinka Betting Tip

  • Andreas Seppi has won his last five 2nd Rd matches at the Australian Open
  • Wawrinka leads the head to head 9-3
  • Stan Wawrinka is a former Australian Open champion

At the very least this looks like a match which could go the distance. The thing to take into consideration is that Wawrinka has fallen at this stage in his last two Australian Open campaigns. We have also seen Wawrinka misfire this season against a player ranked lower than 80th in the world.
