French Ligue 1
Pick: Angers to WIN

Preview: 12th-placed Angers will return to the top half of the Ligue 1 table with three points at their Stade Raymond Kopa on Wednesday. The task in front of them looks a generous one, on paper at least, as the division’s worst outfit – a St Etienne team five points cut adrift at the foot of the standings – seek to avoid a ninth successive league defeat.

Angers – Le SCO targeting first back-to-back victories since August?

So condensed are the Ligue 1 standings that the difference from Strasbourg in fourth down to Brest in 13th is a mere six points. This offers up hope for teams like Angers who, in 12th, can shoot up the table provided they are able to string together enough positive results. They can start by winning their game in hand over the sides around them, which is, fortunately, at home against the league’s bottom side.

Angers didn’t actually win the reverse fixture but can count themselves incredibly unfortunate not to have done, after drawing 2-2 at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard despite seemingly being in control at 2-0 the good with an hour gone. Meanwhile, last weekend’s 2-1 home win against Troyes was a morale boost for a side which had picked up one of the previous nine points and lost the last twice at Stade Raymond Kopa.

Key Stat: On every occasion this season in which Angers scored two or more in a home Ligue 1 fixture, the side from western France has gone on to win. In addition, they are yet to drop points at home to a team currently in the bottom five (won vs Troyes, Metz and Lorient).

St Etienne – Depleted Les Verts facing ninth-straight defeat?

Bottom side Les Verts are among the hardest hit when it comes to losing first-team players to the African Cup of Nations, missing as many as five players who would ordinarily have been considered for selection. None more key to their ambitions of remaining at this level than forward Wahib Khazri, whose seven Ligue 1 goals this season puts him above Denis Bouanga and Saidou Sow in the St Etienne scoring ranks.

All three aforementioned individuals are absent through international selection, depriving head coach Pascal Dupraz of three players with a combined 12 Ligue 1 goals in 2021-22 – the trio accounting for 66% (12/18) of the team’s overall total. Far from ideal for a team that had been toiling even with them in the side, with Friday’s derby loss in Lyon, losing 1-0, a seventh Ligue 1 defeat on the bounce.

Key Stat: St Etienne remain cut adrift at the bottom of Ligue 1 and are now seven points from the relative safety of 18th place and the relegation play-off. Their 7 goals in 10 away league games (W1 D2 L7) is the lowest tally in the division this season, losing their last three said fixtures to nil.

Angers Vs St Etienne Betting Advice

Opportunity knocks for Angers who must surely recognise that three points on Wednesday evening are imperative to any aspirations they still harbour of possibly sneaking into Europe this season. Unfortunately, both sides are without a number of key individuals owing to the ongoing African Cup of Nations. Both will be shorn of their primary goal contributors, which could severely impact our chances of seeing goals.

Angers Vs St Etienne – Key Facts:

  • A 2-2 draw at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard when these sides met first time around this season, in October 2021, extended St Etienne’s unbeaten head-to-head run to three matches (W1 D2).
  • In fact, St Etienne boast a dominant record in this fixture, in particular as the visiting side. Les Verts losing only one of seven away Ligue 1 meetings (W3 D3).
  • Current form, however, suggests otherwise. St Etienne have lost their past seven league matches including each of their last three away from home without scoring.

Across their seven-match losing streak, St Etienne scored only twice but did at least limit four of their opponents to no more than two goals. This includes their last three fixtures on the road at Brest, Reims and Lyon. Angers have only managed one clean sheet in their last six at home (W3 L3), but boast a 100% winning record versus teams currently 16th and below this season and should account for rock-bottom guests.
