Saturday marks the start of the new season in the Russian Premier League, and my first pick features Anzhi taking on CSKA Moscow at their Anzhi-Arena as a new campaign brings fresh hope to the hosts.
Anzhi finished last season’s Russian top flight season precariously close to being involved in the relegation play-offs as they were just one league position and only three goals better off than Orenburg who ended up being relegated down to the FNL.
During the summer months, new recruits have arrived along with an unbeaten pre-season schedule which saw them register wins over Astra and Dinamo Bucarest, but I do wonder if their final match of the season is still in the backs of their minds, which they lost 4-0 to today’s opponents.
Onto CSKA Moscow and they’ll have been disappointed with a runners-up finish at the end of last season to eventual title winners and crosstown rivals, Spartak Moscow, who ended up with a seven point cushion over CSKA.
CSKA will now have to go through the qualifying stages of the Champions League and they’ll join the competition in the third round qualifying round where they’ll be hoping to once again make it through to the group stages.
CSKA have also had a positive pre-season where they’ve gained wins over Partizan, Viitorul and Nafta as well as a draw with Krasnodar, and no doubt they’ll be keen to get their new campaign off to a good start by repeating their final match of last season result against Anzhi today.
