In Group H, Cypriot outfit, APOEL Nicosia, may well be bracing themselves for a potential backlash from Real Madrid when they play host to the Spanish and current Champions League title holders, following the visitors’ defeat last time out away at Tottenham.
APOEL currently sit bottom of a very tough group, level on points with Borussia Dortmund as tonight’s hosts still search for their first Champions League win in the group stages of this season’s competition; back-to-back defeats to Real Madrid (away) and Tottenham (at home) have been followed by slight improvements with home and away stalemates with Dortmund.
However, a distinct lack of goals has really held the Cypriots back, and they face a very tall order in keeping a focused Real Madrid at bay despite home advantage at their Neo GSP in Levkosia tonight. They’ve also lost all three previous encounters with Real Madrid in convincing fashion.
Onto Real Madrid then, and they’ll still be smarting from their recent 3-1 defeat away at Tottenham at the start of this month on match day four which has resulted in them now having to play catch-up with Spurs, being three points behind ahead of tonight’s fixtures.
Indeed, Real Madrid have taken just one point off Tottenham in these Group H matches, but they’ll travel to Cyprus in confident mood having despatched APOEL in each of their last three meetings with score lines of 3-0, 5-2 and 3-0 respectively.
With a home leg against joint bottom club Borussia Dortmund to finish the group matches, Real Madrid can still finish ahead of Spurs, although this is looking increasingly unlikely.
Still, Real Madrid should get an early lead and capitalise here.
