With the title and promotion playoffs all confirmed, attention is on the bottom of the table in the Championship as Arbroath and Morton attempt to avoid finishing in the relegation playoff spot.

Arbroath Preview – Can Arbroath avoid defeat to ensure another season in the Championship?

As one of two part time clubs in the Championship, Arbroath are always likely to be involved in a battle to avoid relegation. Heading into Friday’s game and they are attempting to stay in the league and compete in it for a third straight season. To do that they have to avoid defeat in their final game of the regular season.

If you had offered this scenario to Dick Campbell at the beginning of the campaign he would no doubt have taken it and depending on Ayr United’s result they could even lose the game and still be a Championship club. Campbell will not want to rely on anybody else, however, and looking to take care of his own business.

Arbroath sit seventh coming into this game, one point above Ayr and more importantly Friday’s opponents Morton. They may only have won two of their last seven but the crucial result in that time is a 4-0 win at home to Ayr. It seen them leapfrog their rivals and ensure their fate is in their own hands.

Campbell will also be confident of getting at least a point from this fixture due to it being at home. Their last nine games at Gayfield have brought five wins and three draws with their only defeat coming against Queen of the South.

Greenock Morton Preview – Will Morton get what they need to move out of the relegation playoff spot?

There’s no doubting Gus MacPherson and his Greenock Morton side are in the hot seat. By virtue of an inferior goal difference they sit below Ayr despite being level on points, and it’s unlikely there will be a five goal swing meaning they will essentially have to better Ayr’s result on Friday if they are to avoid the playoffs.

MacPherson – who only took charge of the club in February this year – will at least know that his team cannot aim for anything else other than the three points. But that’s not something they have been familiar with in recent times.

Morton have played 17 league games in 2021 and managed to win just two of them – victories coming against Inverness and Queen of the South. They reason why they are still in with a chance of staying up is because of hard earned draws against Hearts and Dundee, but a share of the points at home to already relegated Alloa highlights where this team fall down.

No team has scored fewer goals than Morton in the Championship. With just 22 goals so far they average less than a goal a game – the only team in the division to have such a return.

Arbroath vs Greenock Morton Betting Advice

It’s a huge game for both teams and one they need a result from to guarantee their place in next season’s Championship. A draw could see them both do that if Ayr lose but they can’t rely on that. Not only are the teams close together in league position but they have been evenly matched in their meetings between each other.

Arbroath one 1-0 away to Morton whilst the meeting here earlier in the season ended goalless.

Key Facts – Arbroath vs Greenock Morton Betting Tip

  • Arbroath know that a draw will be good enough to see them play Championship football next season
  • Morton have to win to guarantee their survival but have managed just two victories in their last 17 games
  • There has just been one goal scored in the two previous meetings between the clubs this season

I don’t expect this game to be much different and am backing under 2.5 goals. We know Morton’s troubles in front of goals and due to what’s at stake it’s likely to be a nervy encounter from the start.
