It’s over a decade since Bielefeld last played in the Bundesliga but some of their fans will be starting to get excited about the prospect of winning promotion. The 10 goals they have conceded, however, is the joint highest of any of the top eight and it will be something that they have to rectify if they are to stay towards the top of the table. Although they should have some advantage playing at home on Friday, it’s been their away form where they have really impressed – winning three of their four games on the road. Neuhaus’ men have drawn two of their three home games so far.

It was a disastrous season for Stuttgart in 2018/19, one that eventually ended in relegation from the Bundesliga following a playoff defeat to Union Berlin. As ever with a relegation, there would be a lot of soul searching but Stuttgart have not wallowed in self pity and are seemingly determined to win promotion at the first attempt. Tim Walter was appointed as the new head coach in the summer and his arrival has seemingly refreshed the team and club as a whole. Like their opponents on Friday Stuttgart are yet to taste defeat this season and will travel full of confidence.
The leaders have a 100% record at home this season winning all four of their games. It’s been slightly different on the road, though, where they have shown they are more vulnerable. Three away games have returned a total of five points with their only win coming last time out to Jahn Regensburg in an entertaining 3-2 victory. We’ll get a better sense of exactly how good this Stuttgart team is on their travels as they face Hamburg in their next away game at the end of this month. If they can get four points or better from those they will be very well placed.

This is an early season blockbuster at this level between two teams who have been very impressive thus far. With two points separating the top three and a small gap developing between them and the rest of the league, there is a school of thought that Bielefeld and Stuttgart will be involved in a battle for promotion. That may still be very early in the season but there’s no denying how good both teams have been.

It will be a big effort from the visitors to get three points on Friday and I’m not overly convinced they will do that. Instead, the more favoured option is for there to be a few goals in this game. Games involving Bielefeld are averaging over four goals whilst Stuttgart’s are a more modest 2.86. Therefore, over 2.5 goals looks to be an obvious selection.
