Arsenal Prediction

Arsenal stumbled to a 1-0 defeat away at BATE at the Borisov Arena in last week’s first leg of the round of 16 but they return to home turf and the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night looking not only to avenge that defeat but also to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

However, it may not be as straightforward for Arsenal as many people may think as the hosts have produced scratchy results in recent weeks despite recording wins against lowly Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, The Gunners have suffered defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City along with last week’s first leg defeat at BATE.

Overall form at home in the Premier League has been good though, as the hosts have won four of their last five matches in the top flight but lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup, while home form has been pretty solid in the Europa League too, losing just once in their 10 home matches since participating in the competition.

However, forward Lacazette is suspended for this match following last week’s sending off, and only five of Arsenal’s 10 matches on home turf have resulted over the 3.5 goal mark to date.

Key-Facts – Arsenal v BATE

  • Arsenal have lost just 1 of their 10 home matches played in the EL
  • Only 5 of Arsenal’s 10 home matches in the EL have gone over the 3.5 goals
  • 7 of BATE’s 11 away matches have resulted under the 3.5 goals mark

BATE Prediction

BATE will look to protect their slender one-goal lead when they make their way over to London for this decisive second leg, and although they’re likely to still have memories of their 6-0 mauling to Arsenal back in 2017, things have changed a little since then for both clubs.

BATE finished runners-up to Chelsea in Group L by some margin as they found themselves seven points adrift of the Premier League club, but managed to stave off a late challenge from Hungarian club Videoton to secure their place in the round of 16.

Although BATE lost 3-1 at Chelsea, the visitors grabbed wins either side of this defeat with victories at Videoton 2-0 and a 3-1 win at PAOK, so perhaps they’re not the whipping boys that a lot of people are making them out to be.

It’s true that their successes on their travels in the Europa League have been sporadic, winning just three of their last 11 matches on the road, but they’ve generally kept the scores close as only four of these 11 matches have resulted over the 3.5 goal mark.

Betting Tips Verdict

Arsenal may well win this tie in the end but BATE have something to protect here and could end up frustrating an Arsenal outfit that is without striker Lacazette.
