Arsenal Preview

Just when you think Arsenal are beginning to get ahead of steam and go on an extended run of positive results, they chuck a clanger like Thursday night in and look completely ordinary once again. Of course, it’s going to take time for Unai Emery to turn this into a squad capable of challenging for top four and better in the league, and challenging regularly for silverware, but there are real frustrations about how things have transpired in the second half of this season. A missed penalty away to Tottenham in last Saturday’s North London derby has cost them a couple of vitals points in their attempts to finish in the top four and an absolute capitulation in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie away to Rennes has put them severely up against it to make further progress in that competition. It’s all too familiar for these Arsenal supporters but the beauty of football is such that the Gunners have a chance to respond and get back to winning ways in another massive game in their season. Emery’s men sit one point off United who occupy fourth spot and know a win would again put them in pole position for that final Champions League spot. It’s likely to be a race that goes all the way to the wire but a win on Sunday would be a step in the right direction for all concerned at Arsenal.

Key-Facts – Arsenal v Manchester United

  • There’s only one point between these clubs in the race for the top four
  • United won at the Emirates as recently as January when successful 3-1 in the FA Cup
  • Eight of the last 11 meetings have seen three or more goals in them

Manchester United Preview

Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are always going to be associated with the Champions League, particularly dramatic end to games in the competition. The Nou Camp in 1999 will be very difficult to top but Wednesday in Paris was another special evening that will go down in the club’s history. With a patched up team and nobody given them a chance of overturning the 2-0 first leg deficit, United produced a terrific comeback and booked their place in the quarter finals thanks to Marcus Rashford’s late penalty. It has surpassed everything that Solskjaer has achieved in his short time as United boss so far, and that’s been pretty good. The Norwegian now has to try and bring his players back down to earth for another big game in the context of their season. They really are down to bare bones at the moment with so many injuries but are also in excellent form. Heading to the Emirates on Sunday, United are unbeaten in the league under the interim boss, a total of 12 games – winning 10 of them. They’ve also won at this venue having knocked Arsenal out of an earlier FA Cup round.

Arsenal v Manchester United Betting Advice

Games between these two have been littered with incident and drama throughout the years, with the rivalry peaking in the late 90s and early 00s as Arsenal and Manchester United dominated the Premier League. The stakes might not be quite as high in this match, but it will have a significant impact on the battle for top four which is the ultimate aim for both teams – at least in terms of the league.

It is a fixture that tends to produce goals, and eight of the last 11 meetings have had three or more goals scored in them. In terms of this season, Arsenal have the highest goals average per game with 3.45, and United the third highest at 3.31. It makes over 2.5 goals look like a solid selection at the Emirates.
