League Cup Betting at Betfair

North London Derby games are usually games to be savoured and when it’s a quarter final in the League Cup a week before Christmas then they have even more chance of producing entertainment. Arsenal were victorious at the start of this month in the league and will be looking to complete a quickfire double whereas Spurs will be out for revenge. Continue reading for a match preview of Arsenal against Tottenham at the Emirates, with a selected best betting tip.

Arsenal Preview

It was always going to come to an end at some point and Arsenal’s excellent 22 game unbeaten run did just that when they lost 3-2 to Southampton at the weekend. Whilst it’s been an impressive spell for the Gunners in both domestic and European competition, there have been plenty of sticky moments along the way and their poor defensive displays finally caught up with them. Unai Emery’s men have conceded seven more goals than any of the other top five clubs, indeed, Bournemouth are the only club in the top eight with a worst defensive record. It’s been a criticism long aimed at Arsenal and will have to be rectified over the coming months. It is, however, testament to Emery that he has been able to find ways consistently to win games in spite of that deficiency and its certainly been a positive beginning to his time in charge. Both Blackpool and Brentford have breached their defences in the League Cup already this season and Spurs will provide a sterner test than those, although the recent 4-2 win over their archest of rivals in the league suggests the Gunners have the measure of them going forward.

Tottenham Preview

Spurs pulled off a remarkable comeback to qualify for the knockout phases of the Champions League courtesy of a well earned draw in the Nou Camp against Barcelona. That, along with continuing to pick up points in the league were their priorities heading into December but the League Cup presents yet another opportunity for the club to win a much needed piece of silverware. It’s coming up on a dozen years since Spurs won a trophy – the League Cup back in 2007. We know that Mauricio Pochettino favours progression in Europe and finishing in the top four but the fans do crave some success in the cups and would relish winning away to their rivals along the way. Tottenham have already defeated another team who they have little love for en route to this stage having dispatched West Ham in the previous round and got the better of Watford after penalties the round before. I’m sure Pochettino would have preferred to avoid a second away game against Arsenal in the matter of three weeks heading into the festive programme of football but that’s what the draw has produced and it provides Spurs with a quick opportunity to avenge that defeat at the start of the month.

Arsenal v Tottenham Betting Advice

The league meeting just over a fortnight ago had everything you want in a derby game. Six goals, a red card, a host of bookings and a penalty for good measure. There was a many incidents on top of those as well and it should see raised tempers from the off. There were unsavoury incidents off the field as well so lets hope we’re talking about what happens on it come full time.

European commitments for both of these may be over now until February but it has been a hectic period in the lead up to this one so the smart money is on a lot of changes but there is no doubt that both managers, sets of players and of course the supporters will be desperate to win this one.

Arsenal’s approach to games under Emery has essentially been to outscore their opponents and it mainly comes down to the manager’s recognition that he can’t overly rely on his defence. Spurs are a more measured team as you would expect as they have been together for a much longer period of time. Both away teams have won through to the semi finals so far in this year’s League Cup but home advantage is often a decisive factor in these derby games and you have to go all the way back to 2010. I don’t expect it that to change this week and advise a bet on Arsenal to win another game at the Emirates.
