Arsenal Preview – Gunners riding high after Old Trafford triumph?

As it turns out, Arsenal picking up a result away to Manchester United wasn’t all that surprising. I covered the game, predicting a stodgy draw, and that was essentially what I got had it not been for Paul Pogba gifting the Gunners the only big chance of the match from the penalty spot. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted the resultant spot-kick and earned his side a hard-fought 1-0 victory over their bitter rivals.

So while Arsenal, and in particular Mikel Arteta, deserve credit for the performance at Old Trafford, especially in limiting the hosts to next to nothing (0.39 xGC) with their possession-based tactics, I cannot help but feel there has been a slight overreaction to the result. After all, this is still the same side that has looked ordinary on more than one occasion this season, particularly at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have won two out of three match-ups at their north London residence but were far from convincing in either, including in wins over Sheff Utd and West Ham – shading the xG battle against the former but clearly losing to the latter. They weren’t so fortunate last time out at home, though, seeing another underwhelming display punished by Leicester, who comfortably kept the hosts at bay in a narrow victory.

Aston Villa Preview – Can Grealish instigate another memorable victory?

Last week, Villa Park took centre stage for another thriller involving the Villa. Jack Grealish & Company leaving it far too late in their futile attempt at salvaging something from a contest which slipped beyond their grasp once Southampton established a 4-0 lead inside an hour. Some pride was restored in the dying embers with three late goals, however, by that stage the visitors had already eased off the gas.

That result followed another home defeat, a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Leeds, to leave Villa reeling a little. After such a strong start when winning their opening four fixtures, with the 7-2 demolition of Liverpool unquestionably the pick of the bunch, they are left picking themselves up following back-to-back losses which have seen them concede more in those two outings (7) than in the previous nine combined.

In Jack Grealish, though, there is every chance of Dean Smith’s side mounting a revival. The England midfielder is the fulcrum of this team, capable of offering a consistent creative outlet as well as goals. Only the Tottenham pair of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have had a direct hand in more Premier League goals this season than Grealish (8 – 4 goals & 4 assists), who was involved in all three last week.

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa Betting Advice

The Gunners have certainly had the upper hand in this fixture in recent times, winning seven successive meetings across all competitions, including the past three in the league in north London, prior to Aston Villa winning 1-0 at Villa Park last July. In that sense then, it makes sense for Arsenal, who have won two of their three home league games this season, to begin as favourites – though they are not my idea of a bet.

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa – Key Facts:

  • A 1-0 loss to Leicester City in their most recent home league game represented the first Premier League defeat at Emirates Stadium in 2020 for Arsenal (W9 D2 L1).
  • After registering victories on the road against Fulham (0-3) and Leicester (0-1), Aston Villa remain the only team in this season’s Premier League yet to concede an away goal.
  • Each of the past eight Premier League meetings held in London contained a minimum of three goals, with Arsenal (W6 L2) victorious in the last three.

Aston Villa appear to have gone off the boil, losing their last two games, but created enough in those defeats – as they have done all season – that would suggest they can pose problems for an Arsenal side that has proven vulnerable at home this season, conceding in all three such matches. The visitors are 6/5 (Bet365) to depart north London, where the past eight league meetings have gone Over 2.5 Goals, with at least a point.
