Preview: Both Arsenal and Crystal Palace enter into Thursday’s London derby having clinched victory last time out in the Premier League. That should lead to two confident sides battling it out inside Emirates Stadium for what has been a high-scoring fixture in recent campaigns.

Arsenal – Arteta keen to see sustained progress?

At the Emirates on Thursday, Arsenal (W7 D2 L8) will go searching for their fourth consecutive Premier League victory, a feat they last achieved more than two years ago under Unai Emery. Another Spaniard is at the helm these days and while this season has resembled something of an uphill struggle under Mikel Arteta, recent displays will have given him and the supporters plenty of encouragement moving forward.

Another three points would be further proof that this team is finally treading in the necessary direction in order to break back into the top half of the table, and not merely because it would follow on the back of recent successes against Chelsea, Brighton and West Brom. In their past four encounters with London rivals Crystal Palace, Arsenal have won none (D3 L1) and conceded five across the two home fixtures (D1 L1).

Yet the Gunners’ record in London derbies this term has been exemplary, the best in the league in fact, registering wins in three of four such matches. Their only failure being the most important of them all, the North London duel with Spurs (2-0). Something altogether less positive, meanwhile, is their record at home: W3 D1 L4. Winning one of the last six said matches and conceding in all of their last eleven.

Crystal Palace – Hodgson struggling to stem flow of goals conceded?

By beating Sheffield United 2-0 at Selhurst Park in their most recent encounter in the league, Crystal Palace (W6 D4 L7) registered only a second clean sheet of the season while ending a 15-game run without one. Meanwhile, the last time they shutout a team on the road was in their 2-0 victory against Bournemouth in June of last season, shipping at least one goal in all 12 subsequent Premier League away games.

In other words, standards have slipped, which is unusual for a Roy Hodgson side that are notoriously difficult to break down. So much so that only two teams – a Leeds revered for their gung-ho approach and an outrageously poor West Brom – have allowed more goals this season than Palace’s 29 from 17 matches. Three coming in their latest away encounter, a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the ten men of Aston Villa.

Any successful outcome on Thursday will therefore be achieved the hard way, one would imagine. Palace do, however, have previous, netting twice in last season’s visit to the Emirates as the teams shared the points in a 2-2 draw. They went one better the season before, securing their only win (2-3) across the last nine away meetings (W1 D2 L6) having now netted on all but one of the past six visits to North London.

Arsenal Vs Crystal Palace Betting Advice

If recent history is a reliable gauge of how Thursday’s Emirates meeting might unfold, the mini revival underway at Arsenal could be under real threat. That is because all of the past four head-to-heads between the sides have seen Crystal Palace avoid defeat (W1 D3), which includes both meetings held in North London where Roy Hodgson’s men have netted five times across their last two visits for this fixture (W1 D1).

Arsenal Vs Crystal Palace – Key Facts:

  • Conceding at least once in their previous 11 Premier League home games, Arsenal last endured a longer wait for a home clean sheet in 1984.
  • Three league wins on the spin now for Arsenal, having failed to win any of the previous seven, while Palace recently ended their five-game barren run without a win.
  • The last three Premier League meetings at Emirates Stadium produced a minimum of four match goals, while Palace are unbeaten across the last two (W1 D1).

Surprisingly, goals in games involving Palace have been the norm this season. Five of the eight away games produced three or more, and with their record away to Arsenal also conducive to goals, we could witness another Emirates encounter between the sides going Over 3.5 Goals. The previous three all have. Meanwhile Arsenal have scored more (8) in their last three Premier League games than the previous 12 combined (7).
