Preview: Less than 72 hours on from progressing to the semi-finals of the Europa League and Arsenal are thrust back into action, this time in the Premier League, for a fixture in which winning has become the norm. The Gunners winning all six previous meetings with Fulham, who desperately need three points in their bid to avoid the drop.

Arsenal – Europe the primary focus for Arteta?

Last time out in the Premier League, Arsenal (W13 D6 L12) became the latest side to rub salt into the wounds of Sheffield United. The bottom club powerless to prevent a fourth straight league defeat as Arsenal coasted to a 3-0 victory at Bramall Lane that ended a run of four games without a win in all competitions. It was very quickly followed by another, booking their place in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday.

The Gunners were outstanding in midweek, racing into a 3-0 lead against Slavia Prague inside the opening half hour in Prague, as they made a seemingly tricky assignment appear deceptively straightforward. Supporters can now look forward to a meeting with La Liga outfit Villarreal, who are currently managed by Mikel Arteta’s predecessor Unai Emery, in little under two weeks time.

On account of their continued participation in Europe, and with qualification for Europe next season via the league unlikely, it wouldn’t be at all surprising were Mikel Arteta to ring the changes for their forthcoming league games. As such, Arsenal could be vulnerable as favourites on Sunday, with their eight home defeats in all competitions this season already their most in a single campaign for nearly a century.

Fulham Win To Nil

Fulham – Parker crying out for another big away victory?

It is now or never territory for Fulham (W5 D11 L16) after they fell to a fourth straight league defeat last time against Wolves, a side that were previously winless in their last five Premier League outings. What made that 1-0 loss at Craven Cottage all the more galling, however, was that the only goal of a game of few chances didn’t arrive until the 92nd minute, with manager Scott Parker describing the loss as ‘painful’.

The Fulham gaffer also went on to say that this clash with Arsenal, a team they have never before beaten away from home in 29 attempts in all competitions (D5 L24), is a must-win – along with, presumably, the remaining five fixtures that follow Sunday’s visit to Emirates Stadium. An unsurprising remark bearing in mind his side are six points from safety, having also played a game more than the teams above them.

However, it isn’t as though there isn’t precedent for a big away performance. Fulham have gone to Leicester, Everton and Liverpool and beaten sides currently third, eighth and sixth in the table. Scoring does remain an issue, though, with a shot conversation rate of 6.4% the lowest in the top-flight. Thus highlighting the importance of a clean sheet on Sunday (four of five wins in 2020-21 were ‘to nil’).

Arsenal Vs Fulham Betting Advice

The last time Arsenal put multiple wins together in the league was in January. After comfortably seeing to Sheffield United last time, I am not entirely confident they can repeat the trick at home to Fulham. Admittedly, Arsenal’s record in this fixture is obscenely good – six straight wins, scoring 18 whilst conceding three. However they remain inconsistent at the best of times, let alone when they don’t have to win.

Arsenal Vs Fulham – Key Facts:

  • Against no other team has Arsenal faced more times at home without ever losing than they have against Fulham, who are winless in 29 away meetings (D5 L24) in all competitions.
  • Arsenal eased to a 3-0 win over Sheffield United in their previous league game – they last recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League in January.
  • Fulham have lost four consecutive Premier League games. However, prior to a recent 3-1 loss away to Aston Villa, Scott Parker’s side were previously unbeaten on the road in eight matches (W2 D6) in the top-flight.

Victory on Sunday would mean far more to Fulham. While that doesn’t necessarily mean they will oblige, I can see them doing enough to escape with something. The Cottagers may have lost four on the spin, but certainly don’t appear resigned to relegation just yet. They were also unbeaten in eight (W2 D6) away from home until recently. As for Arsenal, they aren’t given much time to recover from Thursday’s exertions.
