Sunday, 8 May 2022 – 14:00 (BST)
English Premier League
Pick: Arsenal Win & Over 2.5 Goals
Odds: 21/20
Bookmaker: Coral
(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 6 May 2022)

Preview: Heading into the final four games, the equation is relatively straightforward for Arsenal who know four wins out of four sees them finish inside the Premier League’s top four regardless of what other teams do. Therefore, can Leeds, fighting for their top-flight status, secure a result that would affect both the top and bottom of the table?

Arsenal – Champions League return within their sights?

After three straight wins moved them two points ahead of Tottenham in the battle for fourth place, Arsenal could potentially increase that gap to five by the end of this weekend. The Gunners have won each of their last four Premier League home games against Leeds – three of them ‘to nil’ – and another on Sunday could see them gain further ground on their rivals, who face Liverpool at Anfield 24 hours earlier.

Four victories are all that is required from the remaining four matches for the club to return to the Champions League for the first time in five seasons. It would be a surprise were they not to secure the first of those against a Leeds side they thrashed 4-1 at Elland Road in December. Particularly after just getting the better of three of the current top seven sides, defeating all of Chelsea, Man Utd and West Ham.

Key Stat: Arsenal have conceded in six of their eight previous league wins, including each of the last three. Only Watford and West Ham are on longer ongoing runs without a Premier League clean sheet than the Gunners (six games).

Leeds – Gap to bottom three to shorten further?

Defeat at home to Man City brought an end to Leeds’ five-match unbeaten streak, which represented their longest such run of the campaign. It was no coincidence that this upturn in form coincided with the arrival of manager Jesse Marsch, who has made them a more robust and difficult opponent to beat than under predecessor Marcelo Bielsa, conceding as many to the league leaders as in those five prior outings combined.

While a first loss in six (W3 D2 L1) – to an imperious Man City no less – wouldn’t ordinarily lead to panic stations, the Whites are suddenly looking over their shoulder with a nervous glance. Lose to Arsenal on Sunday and Leeds will drop into the relegation zone should Everton take maximum points at the King Power Stadium. Encouragingly, Marsch has seen his team pick up seven points from the last three away games.

Key Stat: Having gone seven consecutive Premier League away games without registering a single clean sheet, Leeds suddenly have two in as many fixtures. Following up their 3-0 win away at Watford by holding Crystal Palace to a 0-0 scoreline at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal Vs Leeds Betting Advice

Champions League football from next season beckons for Arsenal who know wins from each of their remaining four matches can see them finish no lower than fourth. With that comes greater pressure. It shouldn’t be forgotten then, that the players have been in this position on more than one occasion this season only to subsequently falter and handle the initiative back to their rivals. Surely that won’t happen on Sunday?

Arsenal Vs Leeds – Key Facts:

  • Victory on Sunday for Arsenal would see them win four consecutive meetings against Leeds for the first time since 1938. The Gunners have won each of the last four league and cup contests between the sides at Emirates Stadium.
  • Arsenal are on a three-game winning run after victories over sides currently third (Chelsea), sixth (Man Utd) and seventh (West Ham). They face a Leeds side that are currently languishing down in 17th.
  • Prior to last week’s 4-0 loss at home to Man City, Leeds were unbeaten in five Premier League games (W3 D2) – with that their longest sequence without incurring a single defeat of the season.

Arsenal have enjoyed facing Leeds, winning the last three league and cup meetings by an aggregate score of 10-3 as well as all of the previous four encounters here at the Emirates – a ground Leeds have never won at despite this being their sixth visit (D1 L4). The Whites have been combative under Jesse Marsch, however, defensive injuries are mounting and so it looks as though attack may prove their best form of defence.
