Arsenal – Defensively sound, offensively suspect?

After four consecutive victories – albeit one was in the FA Cup and required extra-time to see off Newcastle – Arsenal (W7 D3 L8) saw their brief resurgence curtailed by Crystal Palace, whose dour goalless draw at Emirates Stadium last Thursday also meant The Gunners missed out on returning to the top half of the table. However, there is a belief that they can make a swift return to winning ways on Monday night.

Arsenal have won all six previous Premier League home games held on a Monday. More than that, though, they can boast an incredibly dominant head-to-head record over Monday’s opponents, who they have now beaten in 14 of the last 15 league meetings. This include all of the last eight held in North London, all of which were without conceding, having won last season’s corresponding fixture 4-0.

Fatigue was largely at fault for a lethargic and untidy display last time, according to Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta. Losing marauding full-back Kieran Tierney didn’t help, and the Scot remains a big doubt. Worryingly, the Gunners have now failed to score on seven occasions in the league this season, as many as the entirety of 2019/20, while prior to Palace they hadn’t keep a single clean sheet at home.

Newcastle – Patience wearing thin on Tyneside?

Not for the first time, disgruntled supporters are turning on the manager. Last week’s 1-0 loss away to bottom side Sheffield United the final straw for some who have witnessed some turgid football on one too many occasions under Steve Bruce. Unfortunately for the latter, it could get a whole lot worse before the situation improves, with the 60-year-old possessing a truly rotten record away to Monday’s opponents.

On the eleven previous occasion Bruce has taken a team of his to Arsenal in the Premier League, the former Sunderland and Aston Villa manager, among others, has never won. Alarmingly, his teams have mustered only three goals. An ominous statistic bearing in mind his current side have looked toothless recently, failing to find the back of the net in five of their current eight-match winless run in all competitions (D2 L5).

Any fans expecting a swift response from the Sheffield United loss – a team who had made the Premier League’s worst ever start – could be in for further disappointment. Newcastle (W5 D4 L8) haven’t led at half-time in any of their eight away league games in 2020/21, though would secure both of their away victories this season in London (0-2 vs West Ham & Crystal Palace).

Arsenal Vs Newcastle United Betting Advice

A third game inside a week, or thereabouts, for both these sides, a week that begun at the Emirates with Arsenal needing extra-time to reach the FA Cup fourth round at Newcastle’s expense. That encounter finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, as did Thursday’s league encounter here against Crystal Palace, meaning the Gunners, who are now unbeaten in five (W3 D2) have kept a clean sheet in their last four competitive games.

Arsenal vs Newcastle – Key Facts:

  • Four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions now for an Arsenal side unbeaten in five (W3 D2), after Thursday’s goalless home draw with Crystal Palace.
  • By losing 1-0 away to bottom side Sheffield United last time, Newcastle stretched their winless run in all competitions to eight matches (D2 L6), failing to score in five.
  • Arsenal have prevailed in all of the past eight Premier League home games against Newcastle, who were beaten to nil here on each of their last four visits.

Fairly ominously, Newcastle are without a win for eight competitive matches having failed to find the net in five of those. Goals could be at a premium then, for a fixture which has produced an average of 1.6 goals across the past five competitive meetings (excluding goals scored in extra-time) and has gone Under 2.5 in four of those. A fixture that only nine days earlier finished 0-0 after 90 minutes in the FA Cup, which Arsenal ultimately prevailed 2-0 in after netting twice in extra-time.
