Arsenal Preview – Misfiring Gunners cannot be trusted?

His comments may have seemed controversial, possibly even alienating a small portion of fans who were still behind him at the time of his dismissal in November, but does Unai Emery make a valid point when questioning whether much progress has been since his sacking? He could certainly make use of results to support his assertion, as Arsenal (10th – W6 D13 L6) would win only two of twelve league games thereafter and would appear as far away from challenging for a top-four place now as they were then.

The Gunners go into the weekend in tenth and must overhaul a ten-point deficit to make the Champions League spots. For a team which lacks consistency when it comes to winning – a current run of four consecutive draws is not the sort of consistency fans crave – even making up the six points on bitter rivals Tottenham in sixth feels a bigger task than it probably is. However, a generous list of fixtures does play into their hands.

After Newcastle this weekend is a tricky clash with Everton, but meetings with West Ham, Brighton, Southampton and Norwich are eminently winnable. Yet winning is not a habit for this team: one win in the last nine (W1 D6 L2) is bad enough but even at home, what was once a fortress is now a visitors’ playground with seven of the previous eight visiting sides picking up a point or better. Arteta has, at least, shored up the defence, which was breached a mere seven times in its past eight league matches.

Newcastle United Preview – Is Magpie luck sustainable?

Before the season kicked-off, Newcastle (12th – W8 D7 L10) were among the market leaders in the relegation betting. Even most of their hardcore fan base feared the worst. The team has therefore exceeded almost all expectations thus far to sit seven points clear of the relegation zone in the relative comfort of mid-table, for which the manager deserves a lot of credit. Now demotion back to the Championship is rated as highly unlikely, at a best-priced 9/1 (PaddyPower).

A few bad results, though, and the complexion would change entirely. Bruce will be doing his utmost to guard against any complacency, however, the sheer fact The Magpies have amassed the same number of points (31) as their next opponents would have seemed preposterous at the start of the campaign. Seven coming from their last four games comprising of draws with Wolves (0-0), Everton (2-2) and Norwich (0-0) as well as a smash-and-grab 1-0 win at St James’ over Chelsea.

On the road Newcastle would spring a few minor upsets, winning at Sheff Utd, Tottenham and West Ham, but have largely struggled. Their away record of W3 D2 L7 better than just five other sides, while only three are averaging fewer goals (1-per-game). Recent draws at Everton and Wolves were deceptively impressive in that both were extremely fortuitous outcomes after comfortably losing the xG battle at Molineux and Goodison.

Arsenal Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

The term ‘work in progress’ is banded around a lot when a new manager arrives with fresh ideas and attempts a mini-revolution at a club. That is Mikel Arteta at Arsenal right now and while it is clear some of his ideas are being implemented, particularly with regards to a newfound defensive resilience, the results are still poor with one win from the last nine (W1 D2 L7). Meanwhile, Newcastle have won one of seven (W1 D3 L3) although that is more in line with what we expect from them.

Arsenal Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • Arsenal‘s record at home in 2019-20 ranks only 14 in the Premier League (W4 D5 L3), winning one of their previous nine league fixtures at The Emirates.
  • Just five teams would register less points away from home this season than Newcastle (11 points – W3 D2 L7).
  • A 1-0 scoreline at St James’ Park in August was Arsenal‘s third successive league victory over Newcastle, whose last win in this fixture as the visiting team dates back to 2010 – losing all eight encounters thereafter.

Newcastle possess a decent record in London, with victories at Tottenham and West Ham already, so it is not unthinkable they should win this. Arsenal at 4/9 is, quite frankly, absurd. It is a fixture the hosts need to win and probably should be winning, considering that most of The Magpies’ better work tends to be back on Tyneside. However, The Gunners have one win in eight at The Emirates (W1 D4 L3)! Newcastle or Draw (Double Chance) is 2/1 with Unibet.
