Arsenal – Pressure growing on underfire Arteta?

The 2021-22 Premier League season has been the stuff of nightmares so far for supporters of Arsenal. If a return of zero points and not a single goal scored through three rounds wasn’t nearly galling enough, the sight of them occupying last place in the same table arch-rivals Tottenham sit first, is only going to add to the growing discontent consuming a passionate but disenchanted fan base.

Admittedly it has been a testing early schedule. They were the first visiting team to play newly-promoted Brentford. Chelsea were European champions last season. Likewise Man City in the Premier League. Performances have been nowhere near good enough, though. According to Opta, the Gunners rank bottom of the league for xG (1.7) and xG against (8.4). Reflecting their actual position in the table.

Mikel Arteta has bore the brunt of the criticism of late, mainly from supporters. Some positive news for the Spaniard is the availability of several key players who were otherwise absent before the break. Defenders Ben White and Gabriel are fit to return. Meanwhile Thomas Partey should bolster a midfield missing Granit Xhaka, suspended after his reckless red card at the Etihad, for a game they are expected to win.

Norwich City – Farke’s Canaries up for the fight in North London?

Like their opposite numbers at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, Norwich City remain pointless after beginning the season with three straight defeats. It hasn’t been for the want of trying, though. There were encouraging signs in their opener, even if they did ultimately lose 3-0 to Liverpool at Carrow Road, and although Man City proved too strong, they were close to earning a point last time against Leicester.

Only a contentious VAR call denied them what would have been a precious first point on their return to the Premier League since a miserable 2019-20 campaign, when losing their final ten games to finish thirteen points adrift at the bottom. That has since become thirteen straight losses, eleven of them without so much as scoring, after they were beaten 2-1 by Leicester prior to the international break.

Unfortunately for the Canaries, it doesn’t get much easier. As while they are next up against the only team to have made a worse start than themselves, it is nearly eight years since their last league win over the Gunners. Winning none of the previous eight such meetings as the away side (D2 L6), conceding 24 in the process. This includes a crushing 4-0 scoreline in July 202, the last time they were in the division.

Arsenal Vs Norwich City Betting Advice

This is a fixture Arsenal are not merely expected to win but surely must win, coming off the club’s worst ever start to the league season. Yet to record a point or a goal scored, the Gunners are clearly at a low ebb. But so are opponents Norwich, narrowly beaten last time to make it thirteen Premier League defeats in a row. That sequence comprised eleven losses to nil, though they did notch last time against Leicester.

Arsenal Vs Norwich City – Key Facts:

  • Neither of these teams have managed a single point from their three respective Premier League fixtures thus far, while Norwich are the only one to have scored (1).
  • Arsenal do boast the upper hand between the sides, however, recording six wins in eight Premier League meetings since last losing at home to Norwich (2-4 in August 1992).
  • Both league games between the sides went Over 3.5 Goals the last time Norwich were at this level, in 2019-20, with Arsenal running out comprehensive 4-0 winners in North London.

I’m not sure I could rely on this current version of Arsenal recording a defensive shut out, even if Norwich are without a goal in seven of the past eight Premier League away games going back to February 2020. In 2019-20, the last time Norwich were in the league, meetings between these sides produced scorelines of 2-2 and 4-0. With both in a vulnerable state, this has the hallmarks of another wild encounter.
