Arsenal – Emirates form the bedrock for top-four push?

Following a brief wobble that seen them record three losses in four league outings – each of them away from home – Arsenal produced the desired response in their latest showing, dispatching Southampton 3-0 over the weekend. That win saw them climb to within a couple points of fourth place West Ham, who they meet at the Emirates on Wednesday night and will leapfrog provided this fixture remains true to script.

Arsenal have won 10 of the previous 11 Premier League home meetings between these sides, which includes the last five in a row. Moreover, the Gunners form at the Emirates this season really does stand up to scrutiny and is among the best in the league. No team has won more home league games in 2021-22 (6) than Mikel Arteta’s men, while a return of 19 points from 24 is joint-best alongside Man City.

Saturday’s victory over the Saints was a fourth on the spin in north London, the last three of which (versus Watford, Newcastle and, of course, Southampton) achieved with clean sheets from in-form shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale. For those interested, Arsenal last managed four successive home wins to nil in the competition in May 2017, with the final game in that run against a Sunderland side managed by David Moyes.

West Ham – Moyes determined to end Arsenal hoodoo?

Fourth place West Ham are now just a point clear of a chasing pack spearheaded by a resurgent Man United coming into this midweek round of top-flight action. A thoroughly uninspiring goalless draw away to Burnley on Sunday seeing them concede yet more ground on their rivals, failing to create a single big chance at Turf Moor against a team that has languished in the relegation zone for much of the campaign.

That is now one win in five Premier League games (D2 L2) having picked up one point from nine on the road. For some context, they had dropped just two points on the road all season prior to this, winning four of five said fixtures. There was even an element of good fortunate about their sole win in this lean spell, as Arthur Masuaku’s bizarre late winner condemned Chelsea to defeat at the London Stadium.

At the Emirates, meanwhile, the Hammers last tasted victory in 2015, losing on all five subsequent visits by an aggregate of 3-14. If that wasn’t nearly ominous enough, David Moyes has fared even worse, winning none of seventeen Premier League away games as a manager against the Gunners (D4 L13). Although his current team do boast an eight-game unbeaten run when playing in midweek in the league (W4 D4).

Arsenal Vs West Ham Betting Advice

In truth, Arsenal struggle to convince at the best of times. Yet their recent run of good form at the Emirates (not lost a Premier League game there since Chelsea turned them over in August, winning six of the next seven said fixtures) combined with their formidable record when hosting Wednesday’s opponents (won last five home league meetings versus West Ham) suggests the hosts are worth siding with.

Arsenal Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • A sixth consecutive Premier League home win over West Ham would see Arsenal move about the Hammers, who are losing ground in fourth place after one win in five (D2 L2).
  • Conversely, Arsenal are in red hot form but especially here at the Emirates, winning six of their last seven top-flight matches there including each of the last four (three to nil).
  • Whereas Arsenal are bidding for a fourth successive home clean sheet, West Ham are coming off one goal scored across their three previous away league games (D1 L2).

At the same time as Arsenal continue to churn out victories on home soil – winning the last four, with the last three all being to nil – West Ham are becoming a fading force on their travels. They struggled to create any chances of note in the 0-0 draw at Burnley last time and have now taken one point from the last three away games. Michail Antonio going missing, having not scored a league goal since mid-October, isn’t helping.
