Ashleigh Barty looks as if she is going to take some stopping in this year’s Australian Open. The home favourite marched her way through to the quarter-finals after battling past Alison Riske.
It is Petra Kvitova awaiting Barty now in the quarters. Kvitova has been in superb form and in terms of the overall outright picture of the Australian Open, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the winner of this match went all the way.

Barty showing title-winning form
World number one Ashleigh Barty was up against America’s Alison Riske in the fourth round of action at Melbourne Park on the weekend. Barty delivered a convincing win in the opening set, but then crumbled a bit as her opponent came back at her to claim the second set 6-1 in windy conditions.
But as true champions do, Barty recovered herself, held her nerve and claimed the decider. That was just the second set that the Australian has dropped at the 2020 Australian Open. Barty looks confident and perhaps more importantly, looks as if she is handling the pressure of being world number one in her own backyard.
Coming into acting at Melbourne Park she had won the Adelaide International title, so is unbeaten in her last 8 singles matches this year. You can’t really argue with that. It was at the quarter-final stage of last year’s Australian Open that she bowed out of the tournament. It was her best performance at her home Slam. Can she improve on it?
Kvitova gaining momentum in Melbourne
Last year’s losing Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova is no pushover. She actually leads the head to head 4-3 against Barty. However, Kvitova has lost three on the bounce against Barty. Kvitova and Barty met at last season’s quarter final stage of the Australian Open and it was the Czech player who won through in straight sets.
Kvitova has won both meetings between them on Australian soil, incidentally. Current world number seven Petra Kvitova was up against young Greek star Maria Sakkari in the fourth round. Sakkari took the opening set on a tie break, but that just pumped Kvitova up and she raced through the next two sets to collect the win. It is the only set that she had dropped on her way to the final eight.

Like Barty, Kvitova showed some early season form in a pre-Slam tournament. She ran to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International where she was beaten over three by Madison Keys. She is knocking on the door of the title at Melbourne Park. This is an absolute blockbuster of a fixture.
