The pick of Tuesday night’s fixtures in the Championship is arguably this clash between fourth placed Aston Villa and second placed Cardiff City at Villa Park with both teams harbouring serious ambitions for promotion back up to the Premier League.
Aston Villa have produced a much more consistent and therefore successful season in this campaign under Steve Bruce, although the wheels seem to have been loosened on their way to actually coming off as The Villains have registered just one league win from their last five overall.
That win was a 3-0 trouncing of Reading at Villa Park but they’ve also succumbed recently to defeats to QPR, Bolton Wanderers and latterly, Norwich City on the weekend. Villa still possess a decent home record though which stands at 12-6-2 39/18 and have lost just once in their last 12 matches on home turf.
Cardiff City’s dreams of automatic promotion have been dented in recent times as they could only gain a point in a 1-1 draw away at Sheffield United, which was then followed by a 1-0 defeat at home to Championship league leaders, Wolves, which involved The Bluebirds missing two injury time penalties!
To say Cardiff will still be kicking themselves is an understatement, and this period of the season will be pivotal in deciding whether Cardiff get automatic promotion or have to go through the lottery of the play-offs.
With four away matches in their next five fixtures, Cardiff really need to get something here against Villa, and they bring a six match unbeaten run on the road with them to the west midlands tonight.
Cardiff’s away record stands at 9-5-5 24/19, and they’ve collected recent wins at Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Brentford.
