Aston Villa play host to Sunderland at Villa Park on Tuesday night with the home side looking to build upon their encouraging 2-1 win away at QPR on Saturday, with Steve Bruce’s men keen to maintain their current play-off position in the Championship.
Villa provided Bruce with a positive reaction against QPR following a 2-1 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the previous match, but they still possess a solid looking home record of 4-3-1 11/7 at Villa Park, having lost just twice in their last 16 league matches in front of their home fans.
Prior to that defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa had won three on the trot with victories over Nottingham Forest, Bolton Wanderers and Fulham, and with Sunderland struggling at the foot of the Championship, the home side will be keen to take advantage this evening.
Onto Sunderland then, and the Black Cats will make their way to the west midlands with new manager Chris Coleman in charge of the north-east strugglers, but he has a very tough job on his hands to pull them out of the relegation mire.
However, only four points separate them and the safety position of 21st place ahead of Tuesday night’s clash, but with an appalling run of 15 league matches without a win, Coleman and his side certainly look to have their work cut out to get a result at Villa Park this evening.
An away record of 1-4-3 12/17 includes just one win on the road which was achieved in a 3-1 win at Norwich City way back in mid-August, but the rot has set in and it’s hard to see them matching in-form Villa here.
