Aston Villa – Smith’s men labouring towards seasons end ?

Premier League wins have been few and far between for Aston Villa (W14 D6 L13) since the turn of the year, with last week’s 2-1 victory away to Everton just their sixth, in what was their nineteenth league game, of 2021. For context, they already had eight under their belts in five fewer games by the end of December. On Sunday, they host a Man Utd outfit who are yet to lose an away league game in 2020-21.

Villa have not won any of their past sixteen top-flight meetings with the Red Devils, winning none of the last 21 as the home side (D7 L14). Dean Smith’s side also possess a rotten record when hosting the league’s better teams this season. Since that unforgettable 7-2 triumph over Liverpool in October, the Villains have lost to all of Leicester, Man City, Tottenham and West Ham here at Villa Park.

Struggling Fulham were the last visiting side to succumb to Villa, losing 3-1 in early April. That their sole win at home in the last six (D2 L3), requiring a scrappy goal in the dying moments to salvage a 2-2 draw with second-bottom West Brom last time out on home turf. Meanwhile, despite registering 14 Premier League clean sheets so far, they are now on the longest wait for one in the division (7 games).

Manchester United – Ole paying price for fan discontent?

The first of three Premier League games inside seven days for Manchester United (W19 D10 L4). Thrust into action three days after they were in Italy contesting the second-leg of a Europa League semi-final. Sunday will also be their first league game since the postponement of one of England’s most iconic fixtures, with last week’s clash with Liverpool comprised owing to crowd trouble around Old Trafford.

That fixture has since been rearranged for this coming Thursday, 48 hours after they entertain third-place Leicester. One can only assume Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be fuming behind the scenes. The Norwegian has been left with a gruelling schedule which could undermine not only his attempts to secure second place behind Man City, but also the fitness and conditioning of his squad with a European final on the horizon.

It remains to be seen which fixtures are prioritised over others. It does seem unlikely the bulk of the usual XI start all three games though. Sunday’s team sheet could be strong, however, owing to the fact United are only three shy of Arsenal’s all-time top-flight record for consecutive away matches without losing. In 2021 they have been especially miserly, conceding just three in ten away league games (W4 D6).

Aston Villa Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Away from home Manchester United continue to be imperious. The Red Devils remain undefeated across all 17 away league games this term, conceding a measly three in the last ten – though six of those resulted in draws, while only one featured at least three goals. This would suggest a low-scoring match on Sunday, however, Aston Villa’s recent encounter have been end-to-end and laden with goals.

Aston Villa Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Since a 3-1 win in 2005, Aston Villa have gone 21 Premier League home games without a win against Manchester United. The latter won this same fixture 3-0 last season.
  • Each of Aston Villa‘s last five league games seen them score and concede. However, both teams scoring has only occurred in three of Man Utd’s ten away league games in 2021.
  • Manchester United, currently 24 away games unbeaten (W15 D9), are closing in on the all-time record for the longest unbeaten streak away from home in the English top-flight.

Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score has delivered in Villa’s past five Premier League games, with three coming at Villa Park including in a 2-1 defeat to Man City. Once among the league’s most resolute sides, Dean Smith’s men are all of a sudden playing with reckless abandon. So while Man Utd are fancied to preserve their excellent away record, they may be given a scare along the way.
