Aston Villa – Up to speed after Etihad examination?

A thoroughly absorbing contest on Wednesday saw Aston Villa (W8 D2 L6) mark their Premier League return after a 19-day hiatus with a 2-0 defeat, becoming the sixth team in a row to lose to Manchester City. This was in spite of the best efforts from their defenders, who between them made countless blocks, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made seven saves only to concede twice in the final 11 minutes.

Villa had their moments up the other end but failed to convert numerous dangerous breakaways into clear sights on goal, registering only a third blank in what was their sixteenth fixture of a disrupted season. On Saturday, however, they face a Newcastle side that has conceded in seven of their past eight away league games, while Villa average more goals at home (2.14 per game) than all bar Liverpool.

Manager Dean Smith will be absent from the touchline following his dismissal in midweek but could otherwise name an unchanged side, with only Anwar El Ghazi threatening to break into a settled XI. The Netherlands winger had started five of the six league games prior to featuring as a substitute against Man City, netting five times as Villa picked up 11 of a possible 18 points (W3 D2 L1) and were beaten only by Man Utd.

Newcastle – Bruce teetering on the brink?

Mounting pressure on the club to sack manager Steve Bruce underscores the chaos currently engulfing Newcastle (W5 D4 L9), who seem to find themselves in this predicament on a near annual basis. On this particular occasion, fan disgruntlement isn’t without some degree of justification. Supporters last seen their team win a Premier League game at home to West Brom on 12 December, and it has been bleak thereafter.

Last Monday’s resounding defeat at the Emirates against Arsenal, who probably should have scored more than the three they did, the latest in a now seven match barren run for the Magpies stretching back more than a month. A drab period exacerbated by exits from the League Cup and FA Cup, to Brentford and Arsenal, meaning Steven Bruce has overseen nine straight competitive games without a win (D3 L6).

Alarmingly, despite Bruce naming several attackers in his initial XI, the team’s scoring woes were even more pronounced. Bernd Leno only had one saved to make in the Arsenal goal as Newcastle failed to score for the third consecutive Premier League away game, and for the fourth league game in five. Moreover, they have now lost each of the last four on the road since a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace in November.

Aston Villa Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

With only one win from the previous twelve Premier League meetings (W1 D6 L5), there will surely never be a better time for Aston Villa to bolster a miserable recent record against Newcastle. Villa would, however, prevail in last season’s corresponding fixture at Villa Park. Snapping a five-game winless sequence in the top-flight at home to Newcastle courtesy of goals from Conor Hourihane and Anwar El Ghazi.

Aston Villa Vs Newcastle – Key Facts:

  • Villa have earned one point from their past three league games (D1 L2), having taken 11 points from their previous six fixtures in the competition (W3 D2 L1).
  • Only Liverpool average more home goals in the Premier League in 2020/21 than Aston Villa, while only two teams fare worse for away goals than Newcastle (8 from 9 away games).
  • Prior to a 2-0 win in this same fixture last season, Aston Villa had gone five Premier League home games without a win (D3 L2) against Newcastle.

Villa should appreciate a more forgiven fixture this weekend after taking one of the previous nine points. However, Dean Smith’s side were in excellent form prior, recording three wins in four (D1). Meanwhile, only Man City have kept more clean sheets than their eight. That, coupled with the fact Newcastle are currently toothless (1 goal in 5 league games, none in last 3 away), suggests a second successive win to nil at Villa Park beckons for the hosts.
