Aston Villa – Early Gerrard enthusiasm running on empty?

After a bright start as manager, Villa have begun to fade under Steven Gerrard. Last week’s 1-1 draw away to Leicester City at least stopped the rot, though, making up for their lack of guile and creativity (0.65xGF) by turning in a solid defensive display (0.25 xGA) that yielded a first clean sheet since the 3-0 win at Leeds on 10 March. However, that is still only one point taken out of the last fifteen available (D1 L4).

Small margins saw Aston Villa miss out on a top-half finish last season, finishing with 55 points after 38 games. They’ll need to win every one of their six remaining fixtures to match that total. An improbable feat for a side with four wins from fourteen league games since the turn of the year, and just one across their last seven here at Villa Park (W1 D2 L4). Failing to so much as score in three of four prior home outings.

Key Stat: Aston Villa are currently winless for five Premier League games (D1 L4), managing only two goals in this period having failed to score in each of their past two home games.

 

 

Norwich City – Relegation confirmed with four games to spare?

The Canaries brief resistance appears to have been broke after successive defeats, the first of those in spirited fashion at Old Trafford against Man Utd before a 3-0 drubbing at home to in-form Newcastle, left them on the cusp of having their relegation back to the Championship made official. However, three points at Villa Park – a ground they last won a league game way back in 1992 (D3 L5 since) – delays the inevitable.

Dean Smith would love nothing more than to beat the side with whom he was shown the door earlier in the campaign. Yet his Norwich team were well beaten last time, making it eight defeats in their last ten to remain rooted to the bottom of the table. That was only a second game in seven in which they couldn’t muster a goal. Although, away from home, no team has netted fewer than the Canaries’ 10 from 16 games.

Key Stat: No Premier League player this season has contributed more goals towards their team’s overall total than Norwich striker Teemu Pukki. The Finland international has ten league goals thus far, with four of them coming in his last seven appearances.

Despite going their past five matches without registering a win, Aston Villa are very short odds to make it an unhappy return to Villa Park for former boss Dean Smith, whose Norwich side could even be relegated as early as this weekend. In fact, the Canaries have accrued more points from their last five games than their opponents (4 vs 1). Making odds of 19/10 about them avoiding defeat somewhat appealing.

 

 

Then again, only Everton posses a worse away record than Norwich, losing 11 of 16 away league games in 2021-22. Nine of those were ‘to nil’. One player capable of compounding such a record is Phil Coutinho. The Brazilian has gone off the boil after a blistering start to his Villa career but does tend to reserve his best for Villa Park.
