Sunday’s clash at Villa Park is going to impact upon the top and bottom of the Premier League as Aston Villa look to move away from the bottom three hosting a Spurs team attempting to inch closer to the top four.

Aston  Villa Preview – Can Villa bounce back from defeat last time out and ease their relegation fears?

Despite the vast sums of money spent in strengthening the squad last summer, Aston Villa are very much involved in the battle to avoid relegation. Dean Smith’s men are just a point above the bottom three as they play their first game since that winter break. It was a disappointing way to go into it, however, losing 2-1 away to Bournemouth – another club who are mired in the fight for survival.
This game marks that start of a really challenging run of games for Villa which also features their EFL Cup final against Manchester City in a couple of weeks.

Smith’s men will face a resurgent Southampton and two of the current top four after this Spurs game so they will have to be at their very best in order to take valuable points from this next set of fixtures.

League wins have been hard to come by in the last three months as Villa have managed just three victories in their last 12 games. They’ve also conceded a huge number of goals – especially at home – with 14 allowed in their last five league games at Villa Park. That’s something which will have to change if they are to move clear of the bottom three.

Tottenham Preview – Can Spurs make it three wins in the league for the first time this season?

For a team who reached the Champions League final last season and finished in the top four, building on a number of years of relative success, Tottenham’s struggles over the last year or so are indicated by the fact they have not won three league games since February 2019. That’s remarkable for a team who have aspirations of finishing in the top four and are in with a realistic chance of doing just that.

It’s also an illustration of how inconsistent the other teams around them have been and Jose Mourinho will be aware that if his own team can string together four or five wins then they would be in with a great chance of finishing fourth.

Spurs come into this game in sixth place and only four points behind Chelsea who are certainly showing signs that they can be caught. It makes this game all that more significant as Tottenham can make it three wins on the bounce should they take victory from Villa Park on Sunday.

As well as the three points it would be a psychological boost for the players who have been questioned for much of this campaign, along with their coach.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Betting Advice

Villa started their first Premier League season in four years by taking a shock lead away to Tottenham on the opening day of the season only to eventually lose out 3-1. In many ways it sums up their campaign so far in that they have shown a lot of promise but ultimately – more often than not – have fallen short.
Tottenham know they need to start taking more points on their travels having won just two of 12 away games this season. Villa – who are 12 points worse off – have won the same number.

Key Facts – Aston Villa vs Tottenham Betting Tip

  • Villa sit one point above the relegation zone and have the joint worst defensive record in the league
  • Spurs’ inconsistencies are indicated by the fact they have not won more than two consecutive games in the league so far
  • This is a repeat of the opening match of the season which Spurs eventually won 3-1

Four of Villa’s five home wins have come against teams in the bottom six so there is clearly an issue when they face the better teams in the league. Spurs are still very much a work in progress but this has the look of a game where they can get a rare away win.
