Atalanta – La Dea purring in Bergamo?

Any faint hopes Atalanta (W14 D7 L4) still harboured about forcing themselves into the title picture late into the season were extinguished last time, going down 1-0 at leaders Inter Milan on Monday night. The Nerazzurri now six points clear atop Serie A. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, meanwhile, reside thirteen points further back, in fifth, and know their attentions quickly turn to securing a third successive top-four finish.

With fourth-placed Roma a point in front, Gasperini is hardly in a position to be taking Friday’s fixture lightly, despite the decisive leg of their last-sixteen Champions League tie with Real Madrid to come on Tuesday. Three important matches inside eight days, then, and it remains to be seen whether changes to the first-team are abound for the arrival of Spezia: one of four teams to shutout Le Dea in Serie A this term.

The most recent of those, of course, being Inter Milan. That narrow loss resulted in a first for five league games, having previously registered 12 points from a possible 12 with four straight victories against Cagliari, Crotone, Napoli and Sampdoria. In Bergamo, however, they are seeking a third straight win, losing just once – 1-3 vs Lazio – inside their own stadium since the end of November (W6 D2 L1).

Spezia – Liguarians out to spring another away upset?

The Ligurians have exceeded most pundit’s expectations, in what is the club’s maiden campaign in Serie A following promotion from Serie B as play-off winners in 2020. Thus far, Vincenzo Italiano and his team have managed six wins from 26 top-flight fixtures. A tally better than four other sides, and explains their six-point buffer on those currently languishing in the relegation zone ahead of Friday’s trip to Bergamo.

Spezia (W6 D8 L12) would claim four of those wins on the road, meanwhile, where they have picked up a greater share of their total points this season (58% – W4 D3 L6). Their record away to the top teams is on the poor side, though, losing at all of the current top-four – though went to Napoli and Sassuolo, in sixth and ninth respectively, and earned 2-1 victories, in spite of conceding the opening goal in both contests.

Last month’s 2-0 triumph at home to then-leaders AC Milan was undoubtedly their crowning achievement. However, since then, Spezia have picked up two points (D2 L2) and been beaten 3-0 away from home by Fiorentina and Juventus. In fact, the Ligurians shipped 3+ goals in all-but one of the past four away fixtures. Next up Atalanta, a team seeking to score three or more for a fourth successive home game.

Atalanta Vs Spezia Betting Advice

A contest with huge significance at both ends of Serie A. Atalanta cannot afford to be conceding any more ground in the race for the top-four, trailing Roma by a point ahead of this latest round. It is a delicate balancing act, however, for coach Gasperini whose side are in midweek Champions League action on the Tuesday. Spezia, whom succumbed to defeat away to all of the sides currently above Friday’s hosts, will be praying for some rotation no doubt.

Atalanta Vs Spezia – Key Facts:

  • The sides shared the points after a 0-0 draw in La Spezia last November. That a first-ever competitive meeting between the clubs.
  • Atalanta have scored three or more on eight occasions in thirteen home games this term (W7 D3 L3), including the last three such matches (W2 D1).
  • Spezia would concede at least three times in five of thirteen away league games this season – and at least twice in eight – doing so in three of the last four away (W1 L3).

Atalanta fired only their fourth blank of the term last time out, while Spezia surprisingly achieved the feat back when these sides met on 21 November. A repeat seems unlikely, however. Across the previous three Serie A matches here at Gewiss Stadium, Atalanta accrued scoring hauls of 3, 4 and 5 – the latter against another promoted team, Crotone. Spezia, meanwhile, were beaten while conceding 3+ in three of their last four away Serie A games.
