The opening weekend of the new Spanish top flight season continues on Sunday evening with Athletic Bilbao playing host to newly promoted Getafe at their San Mamés Barria, as the hosts look to build upon their recent success in the Europa League.
The hosts registered what could be a very valuable 3-2 win in the first leg of the Europa League qualifiers during the week away at Panathinaikos, and with the second leg being on home turf this week, Athletic Bilbao must be confident of their chances of progressing through to the group stages of the competition.
But it’s back to La Liga action this weekend, and Bilbao ended last campaign with a very impressive home record of 13-4-2 36/18. They’re unbeaten in their last four at home in the league.
Visitors Getafe had to go through the Segunda Division play-offs to earn promotion back up to La Liga at the end of last season where they defeated Tenerife 3-2 on aggregate after trailing the first leg 1-0. However, they bounced back in the second leg at home with a 3-1 win which saw them promoted.
Getafe will be keen to make a much better fist of things in this new campaign in their return to the Spanish top flight, following relegation last time at this level which included losing eight of their last ten away matches.
In addition, the last time they visited Athletic Bilbao, the hosts saw them off with a 3-1 win, so they’ll be looking to improve upon this last result this time around.
The recent win over Panathinaikos will have given Athletic Bilbao a major boost ahead of this clash, so I’ll back the hosts to start off their league campaign with a win here.
