Athletic Bilbao Preview – Still not clicking in attack?

After successive away outings, Athletic Bilbao return to San Mames for the first time in 2020/21 looking to build on their weekend triumph over Eibar. A well-taken brace from midfielder Unai Lopez, who had only managed one goal across his previous 34 league appearances, inflicting all of the damage inside Ipurua Stadium. The midfielder helping his side clinch the spoils in the first of several Basque derbies to be played over the coming season.

Despite finding the net twice last time out on Sunday, it was another lacklustre attacking effort (xG: EIB 0.75 – 0.6 BIL) from Gaizka Garitano’s side. Bilbao have now failed to muster more than 0.6 xGF in either of their first two encounters. Meanwhile they generated a measly 0.53 xGF in their opening 2-0 loss at Granada, for what was a fifth defeat in six in La Liga prior to last weekend’s win in Eibar.

Creating chances, and then converting them, has been a problem since the start of last season. In 2019/20, Athletic Bilbao failed to score in more than a third (37%) of their La Liga games and would succumb to a ‘to nil’ defeat on nine occasions (they were beaten 13 times). Furthermore, this is a team which has not scored more than once in a home league fixture in ten of the previous eleven such games (W3 D3 L5).

Cadiz Preview – Early displays breed confidence?

Patience is required when spectating Cadiz this season. The 2019/20 Segunda Division runners-up have seen their three La Liga games thus far produce a combined eight goals. Of those, six were netted after half-time, including all four in last weekend’s agonising 3-1 loss at home to Europa League holders Sevilla. Up next for Alvaro Cervera’s men is a rare skirmish to San Mames.

It has been a mixed start for the newly-promoted side. Beaten 2-0 at their Ramon de Carranza by Osasuna on Matchday 1, the Andalusians would bounce back immediately with a deserved 2-0 victory away at fellow promoted side Huesca, before eventually succumbing to Sevilla (xG: CAD 1.37 – 2.81 SEV). The latter not getting themselves in front until second-half stoppage time, having earlier trailed 1-0.

A spirited performance last time out, in which they took the lead within minutes of the second half and looked on course for at least a point prior to conceding twice in the closing stages, should inspire confidence moving forward. As is the fact Cadiz have only tasted defeat in one of their last seven away league games (W3 D3 L1), albeit most of those (six) were played in the second tier.

Athletic Bilbao Vs Cadiz Betting Advice

So far there hasn’t been much in the way of an inferiority complex from Cadiz. The Andalusians have largely matched their opponents up until now, winning the ‘xG battle’ in two of their opening three La Liga fixtures (W1 L2). They’ve surpassed 1xGF twice, something Wednesday’s hosts Athletic Bilbao (W1 L1) haven’t yet come close to achieving but will nevertheless be in buoyant mood following Sunday’s hard-fought 2-1 success in Eibar.

Athletic Bilbao Vs Cadiz – Key Facts

  • Across their previous eleven home La Liga games, Athletic Bilbao have found the back of the opposition’s net on more than one occasion only once (W3 D3 L5).
  • One away defeat in seven league games (six of those in Segunda Division) for Cadiz, whose only win in La Liga so far this season came on the road at Huesca (0-2).
  • A first La Liga meeting between the clubs since 2006. Athletic Bilbao have won on all five previous instances of them hosting Cadiz in the Spanish top-flight.

Last season, Athletic Bilbao secured nine of their fourteen league victories inside San Mames, with seven coming by way of a clean sheet. Cadiz have shown some early promise, though, and boast one away loss in seven (most of those coming in the league below). The visitors, despite averaging a modest 1.05 goals per away game last term, should therefore be able to keep this close against shot-shy opposition. 0-0 Draw.
