Athletic Bilbao Preview – Can Athletic follow up their win in the last round by taking another big scalp here?

It has been a really encouraging start to 2022 for Athletic Bilbao and their impressive coach Marcelino. Their only defeat in seven games this calendar year was against Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup last month. A 2-0 defeat on that occasion came after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the semi-final. In La Liga, they have beaten both Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano, sharing the points with Alaves. One loss in their last five league defeats is a significant improvement on no wins in the eight matches before then.

The upturn in form means they are not totally out the running for a top four finish and qualification to the Champions League. But they are five points behind fourth and have played a game more.

In this competition they have comfortably beaten lower league Mancha Real and then a memorable victory at home to Barcelona – eventually prevailing 3-2 after extra-time. Muniain was a standout in that game and continues to be an integral part of this squad.

The win over Barca was revenge for losing to that opponent in last year’s final, going down 4-0. They can get to within a game of reaching the final again with a win here.

Real Madrid Preview – Will Real continue their strong start to 2022 at what is often a difficult venue?

This is obviously third in the list of priorities for Real and Carlo Ancelotti but nevertheless, it remains a competition they want to win. Real’s lack of recent success in the Copa del Rey noticeable. Their last triumph was back in 2014 and that remains the club’s most recent appearance in the final. Spurred on securing that first piece of silverware last month since returning to the Bernaberu, the Italian will be hoping to secure more cup success.

Their route to this stage has seen them beat Alcoyano with relative ease but they did require extra-time to get the better of Elche in the previous round.

February tends to be the time of season where the big games come thick and fast and Real are certainly in that position. They are four points clear at the top of La Liga so have little margin for error in the title race whilst also having the small matter of a last-16 tie against PSG with the first leg scheduled for the middle of the month.

Although it has been an encouraging first half to the campaign, this month could prove to be defining in terms of how successful it turns out to be.

Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid United Betting Advice

This will be the third meeting in around six weeks between these two teams. Real have won both and all three goals in the 2-1 league win back in December came in the first 10 minutes. The recent wins are a continuation of Real’s dominance of this fixture – they have lost only one of the last 16 against Bilbao.

The home team will be hoping that the circumstances of this game with it being a cup competition and at home are enough to turn the tables in their favour.
