Preview: An Atlanta United side still winless in nine welcome Columbus Crew to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday with the visitors seeking only their second win on the road all season. Something tells me the odds about a draw might prove popular.

Atlanta United – Barren run rumbles on despite change at the top?

A change of manager may not have inspired a first win since the middle of May, but there did appear to be a spring in the step of the Atlanta United players as they played out a 1-1 draw on the road at FC Cincinnati in midweek. Josef Martinez wasn’t immediately thrust back into the fold either, though did emerge in the second half and almost nailed the redemption arc when seeing a late free-kick parried away.

Martinez is in line to start at home to Columbus Crew on Saturday, and does have previous for coming up big in this particular fixture having netted in two of the past three meetings held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Five Stripes will be glad to be home as while they are currently four said fixtures without winning (D3 L1), their only wins this season – against Chicago Fire and CF Montreal – were in Atlanta.

In order to have any hope of snapping what is currently the club’s longest ever wait for a win during league play, at nine games (D6 L3), interim coach Rob Valentino simply has to get this team firing again. Three goals in six – and none from the last two here on their own patch – isn’t going to cut it. Not for a franchise that will still believe it can claw back a six-point deficit on the Eastern Conference play-offs.

Columbus Crew – Zelarayan to the rescue once more?

Despite a dominant second half showing at home to in-form Nashville SC during a packed midweek MLS schedule, Columbus Crew were unable to convert said superiority into a sixth win of the campaign. Instead they were made to settle for another goalless stalemate – that a fourth of the season – that leaves them sixth in the Eastern Conference, four places and seven points better off than Atlanta United.

On this basis, this should be a pleasant outing for Caleb Porter and his side. If only it were so simple. The very fact they are back on the road – as they will be again six days later away to New York City – will have alarm bells ringing. The Crew have toiled all season on their travels, scoring just four in seven such outings (W1 D3 L3) in which their sole victory came against the aforementioned NYCFC back in May.

So stifled on the road have they been that Austin FC, CF Montreal, New England Revolution, Philadelphia Union and even Toronto, who lay claim to the most porous back line in MLS, all prevented Caleb Porter’s men from locating the goal. In free-kick maestro Lucas Zelarayan, though, they will always believe. The Argentine scoring all but one of the team’s four away goals, including last time out in Cincinnati.

Atlanta United Vs Columbus Crew Betting Advice

Rob Valentino’s first match at the Atlanta helm did perk up a team that had previously stumbled from one underwhelming performance to the other. In the midweek draw with Cincinnati, United looked livelier than they had a in a very long time, produced several decent openings to snatch a better result late on, and finished with their highest xG figure for 12 games – the last nine of those winless (D6 L3).

Atlanta United Vs Columbus Crew – Key Facts:

  • It is now nine MLS games without a win for Atlanta United (W2 D8 L4), who did, however, win their only two games this season here in Atlanta.
  • Four of the last five matches involving Columbus Crew (W5 D6 L3) ended in a draw. Don’t rule out another, either: their last two away fixtures also went this way.
  • Atlanta United come into the weekend having netted three times across their last six matches, while Columbus Crew failed to score at all in five of seven away games.

Big chances were at a premium as Columbus Crew were held to their fourth goalless draw of the season by Nashville during the week. Caleb Porter’s side are not strong travellers, picking up six of a possible 21 points while scoring only four. They’ve drawn a blank five times. Meanwhile, Atlanta are still lacking for belief in the final third netting three in their last six games. The prospect of goals, therefore, isn’t healthy.
