Atlanta are the current MLS champions but they suffered an embarrassing defeat midweek and will be looking to bounce back when New York RB come calling on Sunday.

Atlanta United Preview – Can Atlanta bounce back to winning ways after Chicago defeat?

Atlanta may just be in their third season of competing in the MLS but they have already conquered all. The Georgia-based franchise clinched the MLS Cup last season defeating Portland Timbers in the final. A lot has changed since then, however, the most notable transition coming in the position of head coach. Gerardo Martino capped his second and final season in charge with the title but moved on to coach Mexico. His replacement is the experienced Frank De Boer and the Dutchman is attempting to repeat without the services of the impressive Miguel Almiron. The Paraguay international moved to Newcastle earlier this year and his influence is missed. Both those changes have contributed to a slight hangover for Atlanta but they are still relatively well placed.

De Boer’s men are currently in fourth place and six points off leaders Philadelphia Union. It’s a congested top half in the Eastern Conference though, with only eight points separating the top six. Atlanta have also played two less games than the three teams above them and will be confident of a higher finish. They will have to perform much better than their last game, however, when thumped 5-1 by Chicago. It goes down as their biggest MLS defeat in franchise history.

New York RB Preview– Will New York improve away record and win a third road game?

New York RB are one of the founding members of the MLS but have yet to win the title. It’s a demon that has followed them around for years, particularly as they have won six Eastern titles. Their only visit to the MLS Cup final was back in 2008 which is not enough all things considered. They have carried the label of bottlers for a while now and are desperate to break their duck. A playoff finish looks well within their grasp once again this season as they sit two points off Atlanta. This is Chris Armas first full season in charge having taken over halfway through the last campaign. Recently, New York have won five of their last eight with a couple of defeats. Their most recent game was one of those losses going down 4-0 to Houston Dynamo.

New York RB will feel that an improvement in their away form is needed to get them in a higher position in the league. With just two away wins on the road it’s been a poor return thus far. The defeat to Houston certainly showed that fragility on their travels once again. With this game coming so soon after that they have a chance to make up for it, but will have to defend much better otherwise this prolific Atlanta team will pick them off.

Atlanta United v New York RB Betting Advice

These two teams finished second and first respectively in last season’s Eastern Conference and will be looking to climb the ladder over the next few weeks. There’s no doubt that both Atlanta and New York are two quality teams which should make for an exciting game on Sunday. Whilst they may still be looking for their first MLS Cup, New York do have the edge in this fixture. In the seven games the teams have played against each other, New York have won five of them. Atlanta may have only won once but it’s the most significant, as well. Their only victory over New York happened to be in the Conference Final last year.

Atlanta are maintaining their position courtesy of their strong home form. They will be smarting from the 5-1 defeat to Chicago but New York also suffered a four goal defeat of their own. I expect both defences to be in better form in this match, however. With two points between them in the league it should be a close encounter. Atlanta have the best defensive home record in the Conference and they can shut out New York on their way to three points.
