Atleti can benefit from home advantage

Champions League Tips

Tuesday 6th November 2000hrs Atletico Madrid v Borussia Dortmund Football – Europe – Champions League We’re now at the halfway mark of the Champions League group stages and some team’s need is greater than others. Two clubs who appear well placed for qualifying to the knockout stage meet in the stadium that will host this season’s final but revenge will be on the mind of the hosts who were humbled last time out and will be attempting to make up the three points deficit that exists between these two. It was a very un-Atletico like performance two weeks ago in Germany with Diego Simeone’s men losing 4-0. Although the final score was probably not reflective of the overall game, particularly as Atleti conceded three goals in the last 15 minutes, it was the first time that the Spanish club have shipped four goals in European football since their loss in the 2014 final and three of those came beyond extra time, meaning we’re going back nine years since they were so porous in defence in the Champions League. Simeone pride’s himself on how good his team are defensively and that loss would have hurt. Ordinarily the pragmatic way to look it would be that it’s just three points but in the context of this group then it’s given Dortmund a massive advantage in the race to finish top of the section courtesy of the emphatic win. It’s unlikely that Atletico will equal or better the result but they have to win the game at the very least and hope that they can edge ahead on points in the final two games of the group phase with matches against Monaco and Club Brugge still to come.

Dortmund have been excellent thus far this season and are undoubtedly one of the most entertaining teams to watch. They’ve established a four point lead at the top of the Bundesliga and have a 100% record in their Champions League group. Considering the overhaul of players that Luicen Favre and his staff overseen in the summer than it’s quite remarkable. Their performance in the home game against Atletico was full of purpose, attacking threat and swagger and when you think back to their opening group game in Belgium against Club Brugge, they have come an awful long way in a short space of time. One more point from their final three games would see them qualify but we all know that there is usually merit in topping the group which makes Tuesday’s game in the Spanish capital important in that if they can avoid defeat then it would stand them in great stead to finish above Atleti and potentially ensuring an easier draw in the next stage. Having won their last four away games and still unbeaten on their travels, confidence will be high amongst the squad that they can get the result they need.

The meeting a fortnight ago was the first time these two clubs have clashed in the Champions League and it was without doubt a much happier experience for the Germans with Favre’s game plan working exactly how he would have hoped. Atelti will still be licking their wounds from that encounter and although three of the goals came later on when chasing it, it was still very poor from a team who are renowned for being so well organised and who give up very little.

There is a feeling that Atletico Madrid are suffering from changing their identity in the summer with Simeone attempting to make his team better offensively and perhaps diluting their defensive capabilities. It’s an issue that we would expect to be solved soon, of course, with the reigning Europa League holders still desperate to reach the final played in their own stadium. A win against Dortmund on Tuesday would be a big step towards that but they have to pose much more of a threat and be on the front foot from the outset. For the visitors it’s going to be interesting to see how they approach this one as they are such a bold attacking team but they have to play with a level of maturity in this one which they didn’t show in Belgium in what was their only away game in the Champions League thus far this season. That, along with how strong Atletico typically are at home I am siding with the hosts to get a valuable three points and going some way to avenging the 4-0 loss in Dortmund.
